by Barbara Kram, Editor
CHICAGO - Theresa C. McLoud, M.D., was named president of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Board of Directors at the Society's annual meeting in Chicago.

Dr. McLoud, a pioneer in thoracic radiology, has led the way for innovations in improving radiologic education worldwide and is currently the associate radiologist-in-chief and director of education for the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She is also a professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School.

As RSNA president, Dr. McLoud plans to continue focusing on the needs of the international radiology arena and quality improvement initiatives as they pertain to adult education and the preeminence of the RSNA annual meeting.

"RSNA is continually expanding and improving its benefits and educational offerings to the global radiology community," Dr. McLoud said. "I look forward to the continued collaboration of steadfast volunteers, stellar subspecialty organizations and dedicated staff to progress even further in our mission to provide the best in education, science and research."

A Boston native, Dr. McLoud graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1964. After receiving her medical degree from the McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Montreal, she completed a thoracic imaging fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., and soon became an assistant professor of diagnostic radiology at Yale. She later returned to Boston and joined Harvard Medical School where she has been a professor of radiology since 1993, the same year she was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree.

As a world-renowned expert in thoracic imaging, Dr. McLoud has conducted more than 150 postgraduate courses and has published over 200 scientific papers, reviews and book chapters. In 1998, she published Thoracic Radiology: The Requisites, a popular, comprehensive and invaluable introductory text for residents beginning in thoracic imaging and preparing for the boards.

Dr. McLoud's research in interstitial lung disease, CT of the thorax, lung cancer imaging and occupational lung disease has taken her around the world, conducting postgraduate teaching and lecturing. Her accomplishments have earned her honorary memberships in the Chilean Society of Respiratory Diseases and the Royal Australian College of Radiology.

Dr. McLoud was elected as a founding member of the board of trustees of the Massachusetts General Physicians organization at the time of its formation in 1996.

She currently serves on the advisory committee for the National Lung Cancer Screening Trial conducted by the National Cancer Institute, and is also a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Standing Panel for Accreditation Appeals in the Specialty of Diagnostic Radiology. A recipient of numerous editorial honors, including the Radiology Editor's Recognition Award for Reviewing with Distinction, Dr. McLoud also reviews and serves on the editorial boards of several international imaging journals.

Dr. McLoud is a champion of occupational safety and combating global disease, having served seven years on the Mine Health Research Advisory Committee of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Dr. McLoud was awarded the gold medal of the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) in 2004 and received the Marie Curie Award, the highest honor granted by the American Association for Women Radiologists, in 2003. She is past-president of the Fleischner Society, Society of Thoracic Radiology and ARRS.

Dr. McLoud has been a member of RSNA since 1979. She began her term on the RSNA Board of Directors in 2001 and was Board chair in 2006. She has also worked on the Scientific Program Committee, serving as its chair in 1998.

RSNA is an association of more than 41,000 radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists and related scientists committed to excellence in patient care through education and research. The Society is based in Oak Brook, Ill. (RSNA.org)
