DOTmed Attends Vision Expo 2007

by Amanda Doreson, Project Manager
March was trade show galore here at DOTmed.com. In addition to the AIUM 2007, we attended the 2007 Vision Expo East at Javits Center in New York City, held March 22-25. (A sister conference will be held in Las Vegas in October.) Both shows typically draw 15,000 attendees and about 600 exhibitors.

While the majority of these exhibits at the Vision Expo focused on the latest fashions in eyeglasses and eyewear, there were plenty of ophthalmic equipment manufacturers as well. Many of the exhibitors and attendees were DOTmed Users. Attending this show was invaluable for DOTmed as we serve the ophthalmology market and establish our presence not only in large hospitals but in small doctors' offices as well.

Here is a brief summary of the many technologies introduced at the show:

Kowa

Kowa unveiled its popular nonmydFundus Camera. The nonmyd -D 5MEGA Fundus Camera- is a compact all-in-one unit specifically designed for today's fast-paced medical environment. It is sure to improve productivity in any ophthalmic screening environment, for it takes advantage of not only high-resolution digital imaging, but adds a user-friendly interface and the capacity to excel in the networked healthcare practice that has become all but ubiquitous today. It contains built-in 5.0 mega pixel digital camera providing the imaging power for the nonmyd α-D 5MEGA non-mydriatic Fundus Camera, while a convenient Firewire attachment allows for high-speed communication with the capture.

Bicom

Biocom featured its transpalpebral Diaton Tonometer, which is an ocular pressure measuring device that looks like a pen and is used for mass glaucoma screening. It measures intraocular pressure through the eyelid and requires no direct contact with the cornea, as other methods have previously necessitated. It works by pressing the device to the closed eye and depressing a plunger that gently hits the lid. No anesthesia or sterilization is required. It can be used repeatedly during the day with no effect on the eye.

PlusOptix

The Vision Screener plusoptiX S04 is a binocular autorefractometer especially designed to be used in babies and children. It assists the ophthalmologist, optometrist and pediatrician in screening for amblyopia and refractive error. It measures both eyes in a split second to detect amlyopia without any contact with the baby's face.

Nidek

Nidek showed its Excimer Laser EC-5000CX series which is designed to reshape the cornea for PRK/LASIK to reduce or eliminate Myopia, Myopic Astigmatism, Hyperopia and Hyperopic Astigmatism in the US. CXIII includes a built-in 200 Hz eye tracker and also available is a built-in LCD "heads-up" monitor that displays operation mode, parameter settings, microns of ablation and image of the patient's eye for tracking as optional.

Reichert

The TONO-PEN AVIA tonometer is a hand-held instrument that provides IOP readings that correlate strongly with Goldmann tonometry. It is powered by TONO-PEN AVIA POWERCEL™ battery pack, good for over 2,500 measurements. It utilizes micro strain gauge technology and a 1.0mm transducer tip. The device displays the average of 10 independent readings along with a statistical confidence indicator, ensuring accurate, repeatable, and reliable tonometry results. Operators can take IOP measurements confidently anytime, anywhere, and in any position.
