Ethical Debates
On the surface, ethics is easy. Just do it. But in a world of unintended consequences, we need to think twice about ethical reform gone mad.
This week's DOTmed Online News includes several updates on ethics stories. FDA is tightening restrictions on medical experts who advise policy makers and Massachusetts has placed limits on drug company gifts to doctors.
But a medical device trade group says that the Massachusetts effort goes too far because it cuts off interaction between providers and companies--a communication that is vital when developing new technologies. Drugs are different from devices and we may need two sets of ethical policies, according to AdvaMed, which feels industry self-regulation is the answer.
DOTmed Online News stories include links, URLs, and DM numbers (put them in any search box on our site) to help you connect related stories and see the whole picture. For instance, last week we reported that Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America is cracking down on logo-inscribed giveaways. It seems doctors can write any prescription they want as long as they use their own pens.
See you next week!
