Letter From the Editor

Health IT--a Better Way

Each year I take my elderly mother to the OB/GYN where they ask the same battery of questions about her reproductive health. Here is an 86-year-old who orders her groceries online, downloads books to an electronic reader, and pays her bills by computer. Yet, she must submit to questions whose answers have not changed in 40 years. There must be a better way.

Moving into 2009, we can't help but wonder: When will health care universally adopt IT for medical record-keeping? The analogy is irresistible that even little local libraries have bar codes and integrated systems, while many hospitals do not.

This week's DOTmed News covers some progress in this complex area with reports from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and Nationwide Health Information Network. We will keep you posted on related news and progress.

Here's to better, faster, cheaper record-keeping in 2009.

Happy Holidays.
