Letter From the Editor

Less is Best

This week's DOTmed News includes several stories surrounding the challenge of reducing radiation dose exposure from medical imaging.

JAMA reports that cardiac CT angiography (CTA) zaps a patient with the equivalent of 600 chest X-rays, although there is wide variation among facilities. Obviously the concern is, in alleviating heart disease, we may be increasing cancer risk. Fortunately, many strategies are established to lower the dose. In another report, the Society of Nuclear Medicine and other groups are fostering a campaign, Image Gently, aimed at reducing exposure of children. One of the sponsors of Image Gently, GE, has developed newly validated procedure-based protocols. Read about it in DOTmed's Press Room.

With the right training, equipment and protocols, this is a problem that health care providers, manufacturers, and service companies can all work together to address.

See you tomorrow.
