Colonoscopy Reinvented
"Virtual colonoscopy" or CT colonography (CTC) is a scan to spot polyps. It's in the news because Medicare doesn't want to cover it. In response, doctors are lobbying for coverage, including the gastroenterologists who perform the endoscope exam. That's because doctors want to save lives, and once the CT finds a polyp, the patient goes for a colonoscopy to remove it.
Common sense says that patient compliance for the non-invasive CT would improve screening and save lives. Some people argue that a CT incurs radiation exposure, but since the patient is a senior, their increased lifetime risk of cancer from the CT may not be a big issue. Ultimately, shouldn't the doctor and patient decide which test is best?
Read all about this debate in DOTmed News including ACR's report on the lobbying effort, and a related item from ECRI Institute about CTC missing some polyps and cancer that colonoscopy will find. We will keep you posted as the story unfolds.
See you tomorrow!
