Letter From the Editor

Standing Free

DOTmed just got back from two big executive management conferences in San Diego. Imaging 100 was for imaging centers and ASC 100 for ambulatory surgical centers. These are free-standing, sometimes physician-owned facilities. They are under siege right now because even though they provide services at lower cost and higher quality than hospitals, they are paid less by Medicare.

It seems that the government views the centers as competition for already struggling hospitals. But another way of looking at it is that patients should be directed to the appropriate care setting given the procedure in question. Isn't that the best way to control costs?

Watch our news for future coverage of free-standing practice models such as today's news about a restrictive New Jersey law.

See you tomorrow.
