Letter From the Editor

A Defining Moment

Today's DOTmed News includes the latest on EMR stimulus and adoption. The federal stimulus package earmarks billions for health IT but has yet to set qualification standards. One concept, now being defined, is that health IT use must be "meaningful."

That is certainly a double-edged word, referring both to statistical significance (a meaningful difference); and it has a touchy-feely connotation: All the cold, hard data and technology must have a real human impact.

GE isn't waiting for Funk and Wagnalls. The company has put up $100 million to fund health IT now, guaranteeing that whatever the definition, its technology will prove meaningful.

See you tomorrow.
