Letter From the Editor

Paging Dr. Folkman

Today's DOTmed News compiles some intriguing research on several medical topics. For instance, scientists are moving closer to the view that cancer might one day become akin to a chronic condition. Imagine if chemotherapies could safely keep tumors at bay.

The latest research from Israel is based on the theory of angiogenesis--the idea that cancer forms its own blood supply in order to grow and that therapies to choke off blood flow could save lives.

The idea was pioneered by Dr. Judah Folkman, who died of a heart attack in January 2008 at 74. Not a young man to be sure, but the loss to the medical community was incalculable. Fortunately his work goes on in the hands of able researchers worldwide.

See you tomorrow.
