In this DOTmed New HD video, mobile medical trailer authority Geoffrey A. Smith, president of Medical Coaches, demonstrates his Siemens Magnetom Essenza 1.5 Tesla MRI trailer at the recent 2009 RSNA technical exhibition.

In the last 20 years, high-tech mobile units like CT, MRI and now PET/CT trailers have been driving the market, says Smith, whose family has been in the mobile biomedical business since 1949. Medical Coaches is still family-owned; in fact, son Chad Smith works as the company's director of marketing.

In addition to the high-field MRI system, the trailer features a number of developments such as a NASA-designed ceramic material that reflects the sun's rays and stabilizes temperature inside the trailer, diffused air-conditioning that creates a "curtain" of air over the entire interior, and functional improvements like sliding doors and electric door latches. Medical Coaches' hybrid PET/CT trailers even feature auto-leveling systems.
