While countless businesses are struggling to navigate through the tumultuous waters of our economy, there is at least one sector that is still managing to successfully stay afloat.

Medical equipment parts providers are not only surviving the ongoing financial instability of recent years, but many are even experiencing growth, as medical facilities are now much more likely to purchase parts to repair their existing machines than to buy brand new systems.

“Our parts sales have increased about 35 percent over the last year,” says Wayne Kramer, vice president of global parts operations for C&G Technologies.

“There’s just a big need for parts out there, there’s a lot of people getting away from strict OEM reliance, and that even includes people doing service as third-party companies, but also includes a lot of end-user facilities, hospitals and such, that have made the decision to create an in-house service program so they’re taking care of their own service,” he says. “Those places, of course, are buying parts and are more and more looking towards the aftermarket companies and options out there, like us, to supply those parts as a more cost-friendly alternative.”

Joshua Glas, president and owner of Adam Imaging Parts says that his company’s sales are also up from last year. Similarly, Christi Kukes, the director of corporate communications and marketing for DMS Topline Medical, mentions that their sales have also been growing. “People are holding on to their systems longer, so we have seen an increase in parts requests and in sales,” she says.

Mike Helms, president of TROFF Medical, says that his company’s sales have increased by about 20 percent over the past year. “What I’m seeing is that equipment is staying out longer and these inventories are staying current longer,” he says. “We’re seeing that hospitals and medical departments are trying to find more creative ways to save money . . . the truth of the matter is they’re really seeking people like us out.”

Other parts providers, such as ReMedPar, JDI Solutions, Mediquip Parts Plus, and TransAmerican Medical Imaging, say that over the past year, their sales have been about the same as compared to previous years.
