Physicians concur with 90.5 percent of clinical ventilation recommendations made by Royal Philips Electronics' new clinical decision support tool -- VentAssist, according to a recent study. Released Tuesday, the device's main objective is to assist clinicians in avoiding prolonged ventilation past the point of patient recovery.

"The goal here is for patients to be on ventilators only as long as absolutely necessary [to avoid ventilator-associated pneumonia]," Dr. Adam Seiver, head of clinical affairs, therapeutic care, for Philips Healthcare, said in a statement.

The Andover, Mass.-based division of Royal Philips Electronics said the new CDS tool is an enhancement of the portable respiratory profile monitor, Respironics NM3, which can be used with any conventional ventilator. VentAssist's clinician advice - all within current clinical practice recommendations -- is presented as suggested changes to adult ventilator settings, which may boost the patient's ventilation profile. The device aims to make objective, swift and accurate ventilation support decisions -- strengthening patient care and slashing costs.

A 91 percent correlation between VentAssist's recommendations and respiratory therapists' management of ventilation in recovering respiratory failure patients was shown in another recent study.

"VentAssist gives clinicians sound guidance regarding patient respiration in a way that works intuitively with a wide range of existing equipment," Seiver added.
