A joint effort between the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) and Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) has been awarded a federal contract to improve patient care and outcomes in hospitals across New York State. The NYS Partnership for Patients (NYSPFP) initiative will seek to reduce preventable patient harm by 40% and readmissions by more than 20%.

Under the Affordable Care Act of 2010, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services committed up to $1 billion in funding for the Partnership for Patients programs across the country. NYSPFP was awarded a two-year, $7.59 million contract.

"This collaboration is a tremendous opportunity to maximize and fully disseminate the immense expertise our member institutions possess," said HANYS President Daniel Sisto and GNYHA President Kenneth Raske. "We are grateful to HHS Secretary Sebelius for recognizing the ability of our organizations to effectively administer this vital effort."

Together, HANYS and GNYHA represent all hospitals in New York State, from large urban academic medical centers to rural hospitals.

As a Hospital Engagement Network, NYSPFP will provide participating hospitals with intensive technical assistance, design and conduct various training events and learning sessions, and establish mechanisms to measure and evaluate hospital progress on key clinical focus areas. Hospitals will also receive sophisticated data analytics and measurement tools, including user-friendly systems to minimize the burden of data collection and submission.

All of NYSPFP's activities will build upon the many innovative and successful quality improvement efforts currently underway at hospitals and health systems throughout the state, and will be tailored to meet the needs of each facility and community. New York's hospitals are already making progress in quality improvement and patient safety. By providing expertise, clinical assistance, and support statewide, the NYSPFP initiative will strengthen and expand those efforts.
