Real-Time Location Solution Enables Hospital to Improve Specialty Bed Management, Reduce Rental Costs

WALTHAM, Mass. - STANLEY Healthcare, a market leading provider of safety, security and operational efficiency solutions for the healthcare industry, today announced an advanced deployment of its AeroScoutĀ® Asset Management Solution at Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC). The Salisbury, MD-based hospital is using the Real Time Location System (RTLS) to manage specialty beds, medical carts and wound vacuums, building on prior success in tracking hover mats and telemetry transmitters, as well as monitoring temperatures in refrigerators and freezers.

"Our Central Sterile Processing team was spending too much time searching for specialty beds," said Eddie Conklin, manager of Central Sterile Processing. "We also realized that PRMC was overspending on bed rentals. An analysis showed that the hospital owns enough specialty beds to cover about 95 percent of demand."

Historically, PRMC was spending as much as $6,000 per month to rent specialty beds. Although Conklin and his colleagues initially focused on improving the process for ordering rentals, they ultimately identified the need to better track and manage on-hand assets throughout the hospital.

Conklin and his team collaborated with Mark Cornelius, Director of Biomed, who has spearheaded the use of STANLEY Healthcare's AeroScout solutions throughout PRMC. Cornelius brought AeroScout radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to Central Sterile Processing and Materials Management and helped establish a process for tagging PRMC's specialty beds along with the rental beds currently on site.

In the initial phase, only Central Sterile Processing and Central Transport were trained to locate the beds. Since then, PRMC has expanded visibility of specialty bed location to most floors of the hospital.

"These days, we seldom get calls for rental specialty beds unless they are truly needed," Conklin said, adding that rental volume has declined to almost zero.

Since then, Conklin and his team have extended the solution's capabilities to track wound vacuums and to support PRMC's medical ("crash") cart process through using powerful MobileView dashboards. MobileView is STANLEY Healthcare's web browser-based application that hospital staff use to track, locate and report on assets.

"Using MobileView eliminates the mad rush at the end of the month-with all of the medical carts coming to Central Sterile Processing to swap out expired medications and other items in the carts," Conklin said. "Now we can view each cart's location in real time, track the expired items in each cart and then go to the floor to swap out the individual items when needed. This has allowed us to drive operational efficiency with the RTLS solution."
