New FDA Fellowship Program Proposed to Attract Top Professionals

by Becky Jacoby, Reporter
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the launch of The FDA Commissioner's Fellowship Program, a two-year program planned to draw top scientists, engineers and health professionals. The new program will train participants in the factors involved in safety and regulatory decisions that drive the agency and encourage them to make their career at the FDA.

"Attracting the best scientists to FDA helps us make timely decisions and give doctors and patients helpful and accurate advice about treatment options. And timely decisions encourage more investment in developing new drugs and better medical devices," said Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Tevi D. Troy.

The program begins October 2008 and applicants who have a doctoral degree in medicine or another scientific field are currently being considered. Engineers may apply with a bachelor's degree or higher. Between 30 and 40 applicants will be accepted for the premier class.

The program will include more than 20 courses and broad hands-on seminars in FDA law, ethics, biostatistics, clinical trial design and more. An in-depth research project, accounting for 70 percent of time, will be identified by each fellow during the first semester, allowing exploration of a target area of interest. A senior FDA scientist will act as preceptor.
