Crown Medical Systems, LLC, Brooklyn, N.Y., is an all-new venture by Brian Schumer who was formerly the business partner of Gary Benitez at Crown Medical International. The two had an amicable split in July and still do business, according to Schumer.

"We were partners and now we've gone separate ways. He's in one area, I'm in another and we thought it best to do our own thing but we still on occasion do deals together," Schumer said.

Crown Medical Systems handles the domestic market while Crown Medical International focuses on Latin American and foreign customers.

Schumer specializes in sales and acquisitions of X-ray, C-arm and multiple C-Arm, CT portables and mammography. The firm is also expanding into the laser market, not just dry or wet lasers found on CTs or MRIs, but surgical lasers such as those used in cosmetic and lasix surgery.

"We deal with some OEM reps, hospitals, other dealers and we try to find homes for the systems," Schumer said. "We can do turnkey installations from start to finish. We can do build-outs including the electrical work. The crux of the business is dealer to dealer or directly to client." Most equipment is "as is" but carefully inspected, while some is refurbished.

"I do an inspection on almost every piece of equipment we get. That's big because a lot of times when you sell equipment, people don't know what they're getting. It comes in blind. It pays to put the money out of pocket to get the systems inspected, get pictures and the last maintenance information on the system."

Schumer explained that he has to see equipment to assess it because, through no fault of their own, doctors don't always know what equipment they have. "The clinician's job isn't buying and selling equipment; they know how to work it but they couldn't tell you what it is. So it pays for me to do the due diligence first and make sure we're representing what we're actually selling."
