The Philips SmartEnterprise solution is a new hardware system with full scalability that allows up to 16 Pinnacle3 simultaneous users on the computing module.

The largest private radiology practice in Northern California, The Radiological Associates of Sacramento (RAS) Medical Group Inc., specializing in radiology and radiation oncology, installed the Philips Pinnacle3 SmartEnterprise and now has access to all the radiation treatment planning data from anywhere in their network of seven radiation oncology centers. The common database offers ease of use to physicists who can benefit from the systems' speed and can make upgrades easily without having to access multiple servers.

"Philips SmartEnterprise has multiplied the effectiveness and the operational efficiency of an enterprise system. With the new system, plans open faster and our dosimetrists are seeing faster calculations--three to four minutes versus 20 minutes with the previous enterprise system. We have seven radiation oncology sites, and it is now possible to have multiple people at different sites sequentially reviewing a case. This improves quality assurance as we no longer have multiple versions of a plan," said Ali Layeghi, Medical Dosimetry manager, RTT, CMD, Radiological Associates of Sacramento Medical Group Inc.

The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, Tampa, FL, one of the nation's top cancer facilities, also installed the system, which has proven a huge benefit to the facility as it continues to expand and increase radiation treatment capacity the system has provided flexibility and efficiency in treatment planning to the growing site.

"Our challenge at Moffitt was to bring the performance tools, and legendary physics accuracy of Pinnacle 3, into our healthcare system in a configuration that would scale with our anticipated growth model, distribute to the working professional's desktop, and could be factored into our enterprise storage and system management resource schema. SmartEnterprise did just that and at the same time we anticipate a projected savings of approximately 50 percent in Moffitt's treatment planning system operating cost over the next five years," said Mark Russell, Manager, Dosimetry Services for Moffitt.

The system offers improved efficiency in radiation treatment planning including:

Open architecture: Leveraging thin client technology, a centralized database eliminates the need to transfer plan files and streamlines workflow to offer a scalable, multi-center solution.

Advanced treatment planning: Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) feature enhancements include handling of 4D image sets.

Streamlined image import: One click imports of multiple image sets and expanded DICOM export functionality help to reduce time spent on
recomputing data.

There is also a potential benefit of time and cost savings. With the auto contouring tools, time is not spent contouring by hand, allowing dosimetrists to perform simple plans quickly and more complex plans should be able to have more iterations performed.
