ge ct/i ct scan

November 27, 2014 09:41

hello there....

we have a ge ct/i ct scan which was installed 3 years ago. it is an indigo system and has 3.5mhu xray tube. we are hearing a hissing sound coming from the x-ray tube. even if we shutdown the whole system, the hissing sound coming from the xray tube continues. it means even the whole power is cut, you can still hear the sound and it is loud. where does the problem coming from and how will we solve that. we need immediate advice.

thanks in advance

That sound is produced by the anode rotation. I don't know this system but almost all of them has a anode rotation brake that is not working in yours.
The brake system will stop anode at turning off but a nisy anode is an indication that you must plan to adquire a new tube soon due this is ending its useful life

dear Mavivic
remember the anodo of your tube is running near 9000rpm during the shoot most off then after the shoot have a electrical brake that meaning puting a DC current to stator of your tube coil if this not happen meaning the anodo is not stoping ,can be runnig by a 1 t0 2 minute running freely withow any power

normaly the often set apart anode bearings are made of an alloy of silver this free time runnig afther withow any power can show you how used are your tube

Dear Marivic: It is very possible that the bearings on the rotor are going bad, and in that case you cannot do much. Just use the machine until the x-ray tube will end its life. You say that the hissing sound continues even when you shut down the machine and cut power completely. It is the same problem, as I said the bearings of the x-ray tube anode are going bad. The rotor circuitry have means of stopping the rotation of the anode by means of applying a DC voltage to the windings of the rotor. Sometimes this circuit goes bad and the windings do not receive this DC voltage and the rotor never stops and it ends up coasting until it stops by itself with friction. Please check if the braking system is working.
This is all I can tell you for now.
If you have more questions, please reply.

Sincerely: Manuel Brugat/Image Instrumentation, Inc.

Hi. It is anode rotation noise. It should not be very loud. If

First you should make sure your machine anode control system has break or no. If it has break the noise should stop some minutes after scan is finished also just before shutting down the machine, the anode will stop. For your case, it seems the anode control system does not have break, that is why even after shutting down the whole machine, you hear the hisss noise.
If this noise continues for long time (10-20minutes) after power is cut, it means the anode bearings are very smooth and balanced.
If you are sure the noise is increasing these recent days, it means something is going wrong with anode bearings. There is no way to solve this problem. When the noise becomes like a truck noise, it means the anode is going to break immediately.

The rotating anode makes this noise, it takes long time to stop after shutdown. Avoid inproper shutdowns. You must wait until the system stops anode rotation itself then you can power off the gantry.
