The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) or stimulus bill could help orthodontists who may have the opportunity to take advantage of the $19 billion earmarked for electronic medical records (EMRs).

At this time, there are no guidelines as to how the dollars will be distributed, but it is well known that the EMR assistance could help to support the efficiency of physician and dental practices.

In 2004, President Bush signed the first initiative by promoting a 10-year goal to give Americans their own personal EHR (electronic hospital record). The initiative was continued in 2009 when President Obama signed on and the ARRA has continued the presidential initiative with the expectation of creating a nationwide health IT infrastructure creating a national health information network.

Neal D. Kravitz, DMD, MS and owner of VA-based Kravitz Orthodontics says that he hopes that only those orthodontists who truly are in need like those who take Medicare/Medicaid cases and provide a number of pro-bono cases in dental deprived communities apply for the government funding should it become available to them.
