The Healthcare and Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) will be holding its conference and exhibition at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta from March 1st through the 4th.

As the society's name suggests, the conference, exhibition and related educational seminars focus on information management systems and health IT. This is a hot topic in today's health care world as initiatives are being introduced not only by hospitals, but by legislation at the national level as well.

HIMSS10 will likely be the best place to learn more about those initiatives as well as news regarding updates and upgrades to health IT. The event will host more than 300 educational sessions with special attention given to current buzzed-about topics such as: Meaningful Use, HITECH, HIE, standards, interoperability and more.

In addition, full and half-day symposia will be offered and workshops will be available to further the education and expertise of those choosing to attend. Continuing education hours can be received for many programs as well.

Some Expected Highlights from the Show

HIMSS 2010 Siemens Programming Experience Messaging
Siemens Healthcare will take a new and specialized, custom programming approach at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2010 Annual Conference & Exhibition in order to engage with customers on a more personal level at this critical juncture in health care history. This new programming format will focus on creating an atmosphere dedicated to helping health care providers capitalize on potential benefits and proprietary solution updates in line with The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA). Additionally, it will provide a forum where customers and prospects can more intimately discuss their individual healthcare goals with Siemens experts and learn more about the robust Siemens portfolio of Health IT solutions.

Carestream Health will be showcasing the following at HIMSS:
A new version of the CARESTREAM Clinical Data Archive that offers consolidated data storage and management for any data type, regardless of vendor. This multi-tier repository accepts XDS, XDS-I, and DICOM as well as non-DICOM data objects.

Upgrades to Carestream Health's PACS platform (as WIP) that facilitate IT support by providing users with one easy-to-use display interface to associate imported DICOM and non-DICOM data into an existing patient portfolio.

Demonstrating Carestream Heath's unique SuperPACS(tm) Architecture that simultaneously streamlines radiologist workflow and simplifies IT support by creating a global enterprise-wide worklist that contains imaging studies created from multiple vendors' PACS located throughout the enterprise.

Innovative Technology Pavilion
View product demos and presentations on the latest technology designed to improve patient safety at the point of care. Developed by clinicians for clinicians, this pavilion delivers cutting-edge products and enhancements in biometrics, clinical decision support, and advanced medical content in a viewer-friendly pavilion setting.

The Payer Community and Health IT
Important transformations are occurring in the Payer space. While numerous, these transformations can best be summarized by the notion that a major shift has taken place in the role of Payers in the system: A shift from the Payer playing predominantly the role of "Transaction Manager" to one of becoming a true Healthcare "Infomediary" for the purpose of partnering in care delivery to improve patient outcomes. The passage of the HIT provisions contained within ARRA supports this alignment of interests in seven key areas: Care Coordination, Quality Improvement, Consumer Directed Care, HIT adoption, Reimbursement, Administrative Simplification, and Healthcare Reform. HIMSS offers various opportunities to address the HIT areas of critical importance to the Payer community.

The Life Sciences Community and Health IT
Well-designed HIT systems can help improve the quality of patient care, ensure patient safety, and allow for more individualized care. As a partner in improving patient health outcomes, the Life Science community understands that fully interoperable and interconnected electronic health records have the potential to provide higher quality, more easily accessible and more useful clinical care data. This enables important research for purposes such as safety, outcomes, and the robust research and analysis of diseases, which can lead to new medical discoveries and finding new, life-saving treatments. HIMSS offers various opportunities to address the HIT areas of critical importance to the Life Sciences community.
