TeraRecon iNtuition™ enhances the value proposition of Cardiac CT at SCCT 2010

July 16, 2010
Las Vegas, NV - TeraRecon, Inc. (www.terarecon.com), a global leader in advanced visualization and decision support solutions, will demonstrate how its powerful iNtuition™ solution enhances the value proposition of Cardiac CT by going beyond interpretation, and delivering a comprehensive enterprise workflow for the imaging procedure, at the 5th annual scientific meeting of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT). TeraRecon is a Premier Partner with SCCT and will be featured and participating in various workshops and presentations at the event, held from July 15th to 18th 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Imaging is under scrutiny like never before, and today, every imaging test has to demonstrate value in every possible aspect. Cardiac CT is no exception" said Robert Taylor, Ph.D., TeraRecon, Inc., president and CEO. "In an era when CT as a modality has experienced decline and is seeking a new way forward, under pressure from reimbursement cuts, concerns about radiation dose, and the prospect of tighter regulation, Cardiac CT has to do more than demonstrate clinical efficacy. While demonstrating clinical value is a fundamental requisite, for Cardiac CT to succeed in the longer term, we have to do all we can to demonstrate real practical value to referrers who can order the test, and to those providing therapeutic follow-up. Today, this means embracing Healthcare Information Technology (IT) and Imaging Informatics as vehicles through which results can be delivered, and through which access can be provided to interpretative representations of findings. In particular, thanks to the $19bn investment in Healthcare IT included in the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009, the Electronic Health Record (EHR) is emerging as the key vehicle through which to provide meaningful access to imaging results - a requirement that will become mandatory under the definition of meaningful use of EHR in a few short years. TeraRecon has always been the leader in this area of imaging informatics, and hence we are able to offer a unique combination of best-in-class interpretation tools and enterprise distribution of results that offer a uniquely rich and meaningful service to upstream and downstream providers in cycle of care for a cardiac patient."

TeraRecon's Aquarius iNtuition solution provides best-in-class interpretation tools for Cardiac CT, including the AquariusAPS advanced pre-processing server which automatically detects cardiac anatomy, identifies vascular structures, and prepares centerlines and segmentation treatments automatically in advance so that the time spent interpreting the case is minimized. In addition, at SCCT 2010, TeraRecon will demonstrate prototype Centerline Cross-Section Analytics™ (CCSA) which enable the system to draw attention to areas of potential concern in the coronary vessels, based on the diameter profile along the centerline.
In addition to such coronary analysis tools, iNtuition also offers Time-Volume Analysis tools for cardiac functional analysis, and coronary Calcium Scoring capability. All these features are continually being optimized to perform with lower and lower dose profiles during the initial acquisition, to enable Cardiac CT imagers to minimize radiation exposure without compromising interpretation quality.

This suite of tools is unified into a single interpretation workflow through the TeraRecon-exclusive "Workflow Template" concept, which defines a structured workflow for interpreting the case. The result of following a Workflow Template is a Workflow Scene - a package of findings and interactive representations thereof which can be readily distributed and archived for future reference.

This suite of best-in-class clinical tools is offered on a fully client-server platform that can be accessed from any PC, even for the most challenging cardiac examination with thousands of slices. TeraRecon's unique "iNtuition Unlimited" licensing model makes it possible for the system to support an unlimited number of CT slices per user, a capability that is achieved with the smallest hardware footprint by far in the industry, thanks to TeraRecon's exclusive and patented ASIC-based VolumePro™ rendering technology.

Then, to go beyond interpretation, TeraRecon leverages the same client-server architecture to provide easy web-based access to the Workflow Scene - the package of interpretation results that has be customized and tailored by the interpreting physician - via patient consultation PC's, or even mobile devices such as iPhone or iPad. Specialists may access full clinical capabilities too, by launching another instance of TeraRecon's advanced interpretation user interface. This ability to distribute the Workflow Scene through a wide range of web-based technologies, with fully browser-based support and no requirement for proprietary software on the reviewer's computer ("Zero Footprint"), is what uniquely positions TeraRecon to most easily integrate with the Electronic Health Record and to provide a complete enterprise workflow for Cardiac CT that encompasses interpretation, distribution, and decision-support for the providers of therapy.

Accordingly, the iNtuition solution brings a dimension of value to the Cardiac CT procedure which goes beyond clinical interpretation, and which can enhance the potential of Cardiac CT to become an invaluable and indispensable part of the standard of care for cardiac patients.

TeraRecon will be discussing these benefits of iNtuition and more during a presentation as part of the "Manufacturer's session" to be held on Friday July 16th 5:00-6:30pm.
