GE Healthcare said Monday its new compact CT scanner, which is scalable from 32 to 128 slices, received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance.

Called the Optima CT660, the device is designed for cardiac, neurological, emergency room and routine scanning.

It's also touted as more environmentally friendly and energy efficient than earlier models. Waukesha, Wis.-based GE said it uses 60 percent less energy than the company's previous-generation scanners. It's also up to 24 percent smaller, which cuts down on transportation costs.

The Optima CT660's features include image reconstruction technology ASiR+ (Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction) for lowering dose, a 12-inch color integrated gantry display monitor, and "Dose Check" technology which alerts users if radiation settings are too high.

The device was launched in Europe last year, and GE said it was already used at "hundreds of sites" across the continent and in Asia.
