Randy Walker of Genesis Medical

Phil visits Genesis

December 05, 2012
I was in close proximity to Genesis Medical Imaging while meeting with a journalist in Chicago yesterday. Since they are an advertiser, I thought it would be good idea to stop in and say hello.

Robert Dakessian, president of Genesis, wasn't in the office, but I did meet with Randy Walker. It turns out that Genesis just completed expanding their cold-head repair facility and they invited me to take a look at it (you can see the photo of Randy here next to one of their test units). They said that they have made a big investment in this side of their business because their cold head repair business has grown over the last two years. They also told me that although it was possible to repair some of the 10K cold-heads in the field, it's impossible to change components on a 4K cold head, and it's almost always a setback for repairs.

During the visit, I felt like I was in a science-fiction move because of the build-out: They had mounted all different types of cold-head compressors on the wall so that only the control was showing and so that the noise was in a separate room. They also had a device for doing vacuum testing on the cold-heads.

It's clear that Genesis has made a commitment to this because they want to service their own fleet of equipment. I know Genesis is not our only advertiser in this field, and I hope to visit some of the our other advertisers that repair cold-heads in the near future.
