Hitachi Medical Systems America Inc. announced that its Scenaria Advanced 128 CT system received FDA clearance on Wednesday.

In a statement, the company said the new addition will expand the breadth of its "CT product line and installation foot-print in the U.S. market."

Like many new 128-slice scanners on the market today, customers can upgrade from a 64-slice to the 128-slice model with the Scenaria. The new CT also includes a standard 2 meter scannable range table with greater than 500 lb. weight capacity for larger patients, and lateral shift capability.

According to ECRI Institute, 128-slice scanners are attractive to customers not only because they are upgradeable, but they allow for better 3-D modeling and artifact reduction. In fact, among ECRI's clients, 128-slice is often at the top of their wish-lists. According to internal research by the institute, by the third quarter of 2012, interest peaked around 128-slice scanners, while interest in 64-slice ones dropped to third place.
