Mission and Student Learning Goals for a Student in Advanced Studies in Physician Assistant (B.S./M.S.)
The mission of the Wagner College Physician Assistant Program is to prepare professionals committed to healthcare and to providing quality care to all individuals.
Wagner is a small residential college, strongly committed to providing an education in which all professional and liberal arts majors receive the foundation of a broad-based core of knowledge. Such an education fosters abilities in inquiry, critical analysis, and individual expression essential for achievement in a changing society.
The academic program provides knowledge of historical and socio-cultural influences that forms a framework for the integration of experiences as well as an awareness and appreciation of one's own and other cultures. Reasoning skills are refined through the study of scientific methodology and quantitative analysis. Sensitivity to human expression and creativity is stimulated through the study of the fine arts. The college also considers important the moral, ethical and spiritual guidelines in which students make significant choices and form meaningful values.
The residential environment complements and enriches the academic programs by enabling social and cultural opportunities for a diverse student body. Wagner's size allows for close interaction among faculty, students, and staff, which contributes to the richness of the educational experience and fosters lifelong relationships.
The required didactic and clinical phases of the Physician Assistant Program at Staten Island University Hospital are designed to build upon the scientific and liberal arts knowledge obtained in the college's liberal arts core curriculum and assist the student in developing the knowledge and skills appropriate for the profession.

Residencies
The objective of the residency training program in surgery is the provision of diverse clinical experience in the field of surgery which includes the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative management of the surgical patient. About Surgery Residency Program Crucial to this goal is the structured educational program upon which each resident builds a strong knowledge database. The clinical responsibilities of the surgical house officer increase in depth and complexity as the level of the training progresses. The educational progress, scholarly activity and the clinical activity of each resident are carefully supervised by an experienced attending staff guided by the program director. The surgical residency has an unblemished record of full accreditation by the Residency Review Committee.
The Surgical Program has trained graduates of medical students from across the United States of America. Recent students who have applied and been accepted to the Staten Island University Hospital Surgery Program are graduates from leading medical schools as: University of Chicago, Mount Sinai, Georgetown, SUNY Downstate and Stonybrook, University of Kansas, George Washington University, Albert Einstein, Pennsylvania State University, Hahneman, Tulane, Tufts, Creighton, Chicago Medical School, and the University of Florida. Over two-thirds of the graduates of the surgical training program have sought and obtained post-graduate specialty fellowships. Thus, the Department of Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital evaluates the training program in the following areas:
