About 'Magnet'
Magnet Recognition Program© was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, to recognize heath-care organizations that provide the very best in nursing care.
The effort has its roots in the 1980s when nurses began to grapple with the short and long-term reality of national nursing shortages. More than 126,000 nursing positions are vacant today, and that number is expected to skyrocket just as 78 million Baby Boomers begin placing unprecedented demands on America's heath-care system.
In 1983, the American Academy of Nursing's task force on nursing practice in hospitals conducted a study of U.S. hospitals. The research identified and described variables that created an environment that attracted and retained well-qualified nurses. These variables were called "forces of magnetism," and the institutions were called "Magnets" because they attracted and kept good nurses. The study found that quality patient care was provided through sustaining excellence in nursing services.
To earn Magnet status, organizations must apply to the American Nurses Credentialing Center and undergo a vigorous, multi-faceted evaluation. The standards are tough. The evaluation process is thorough and lengthy, demanding wide-seeking focus and direction for growth and development.
As of summer 2004, less than three percent of the nation's hospitals had qualified for Magnet
TM designation. To ensure that Magnet organizations stay at the top of their games, they must reapply for Magnet status every four years.
Nurses are key to the delivery of quality health care and successful patient outcomes. Magnet designation is nursing's top honor, accepted nationally as the gold standard in nursing excellence.
Today, it is important that individuals, not just heath-care professionals, become familiar with the Magnet designation so they can easily identify health-care providers of choice.

Magnet nurses are vigilant. Attentive. They spend more time at patients' bedsides providing compassionate, expert care than at most other hospitals. Nurses are the primary source of help and support for patients at the most vulnerable times in their lives . . . and Magnet hospitals empower nurses to do what they know is right. They can spend the time they need with patients instead of paperwork. You can be sure that MagnetTM nurses have the support, autonomy and the tools they need to do their work well.
Patient care is Magnet's highest priority . . . day and night. You won't just hear about quality from a Magnet organization, you'll experience it.
"Improving Patient Care"
It bears repeating. MagnetTM-designated facilities consistently outperform non-magnet organizations, delivering better patient outcomes. Shorter lengths of stay. Lower mortality rates. Increased patient satisfaction rates. That's the short list of third-party research results substantiating the fact that MagnetTM is the most attractive choice in health care.
"Creating A Positive Health Care Environment"
Today, hospitals and medical centers are more than just places to visit when you're sick. They're dedicated to keeping you healthy.
Magnet organizations have transformed the hospital environment . . . fostering innovative, patient-focused ideas and raising the bar on patient care. Nurses and staff work collaboratively, creating a magnetic culture in which new ideas and excellent work practices thrive.
High employee morale = high patient satisfaction. Expect nothing less.
"Top Hospital"
When U.S. News & World Report published its annual ranking of "America's Best Hospitals," facilities with Magnet status scored among the highest in virtually every category. The report ranks more than 6,000 hospitals in 17 specialties from heart disease and cancer to orthopedics and urology.
The standards are rigorous and focus on three elements - reputation, death rates and other care-related factors such as patient services and the way in which nursing care is assessed. In 2004, for the first time in the ranking's 15 year history, researchers added a "Nurse Magnet" criterion to their analysis. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program©TM is widely accepted as the gold standard of excellence in nursing care.
Of the 14 hospitals singled out as Honor Roll centers - hospitals that excelled in six or more specialties - four of the top five were Magnet hospitals.
