NIH EMS Research Effort Comes to Iowa
The National Institutes of Health has awarded a grant of nearly $2.5 million to a group of researchers at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, headed by Dr. Richard Kerber, Professor of Cardiology, to study new devices, drugs and strategies to treat serious trauma and sudden cardiac arrest in the field. Over the next five years, the Iowa Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Site (IowaROCs), with headquarters located at UIHC, will participate with nine other Regional Clinical Centers in the U.S. and Canada in the most extensive government-funded emergency care clinical trials ever conducted.
The goal of this research effort is to identify and scientifically validate new approaches to EMS patient care that will improve survival of serious traumatic injury and out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. Eleven EMS systems in the State of Iowa will participate in this landmark research effort, to include systems from Iowa City, Davenport, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Mt. Pleasant, Des Moines, West Des Moines/Dallas Co. and Sioux City.
