Weve earned a reputation as a top health care system and not just from the hundreds of thousands of patients weve served. Leading national and regional magazines named our facilities as a Top Hospital for childbirth, heart attacks, back pain and knee replacement. And our physicians rank as Top Doctors in specialties that include cardiovascular, orthopedics, oncology, neurosciences, gastroenterology and urology. Were equally proud of the recognition weve gained in another, less visible area of health care. Saint Joseph Mercy Health System has been spotlighted as one of the few health systems in the United States that uses a computerized order entry system, a key component that improves patient care and drastically reduces medication errors.

Medical Education
At Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, we believe is it paramount to train in a hospital where quality of care is more than a clich. Where patients receive remarkable care. Where ethics and values are an integral part of the institution and not just a framed statement hanging on a wall. If you share our views, consider Saint Joseph Mercy Health System to complete your residency.

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System sponsors ACGME accredited graduate medical education programs in the following areas

Internal Medicine
The Internal Medicine Residency Program began at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1946. It has an established physician education program that is academically rigorous but different from traditional University programs. The program has prided itself on the training of physicians competent in practicing adult medicine who have also developed special skills necessary to practice in the current and emerging practice environment, including knowledge of population-based care, quality measurement and improvement, information management and technology, and teamwork and collaboration.

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is a 560-bed hospital situated in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It functions as a tertiary hospital for transfers from surrounding community hospitals including Saint Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital in Brighton, Saint Joseph Mercy Saline Hospital in Saline, St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, and Chelsea Community Hospital. The local area is consistently rated as one of the best places to live nationwide.

In addition to core training in Internal Medicine, our program provides the following unique opportunities:

* Training in all aspects of adult medicine by a core faculty of general internists and Internal Medicine-Pediatric physicians who are also all practicing physicians. Outpatient clinics are both hospital and community-based and include the Eastern Michigan University student health service. Subspecialists complement and are actively involved in all aspects of training.
* An inpatient service supervised by an academic hospitalist.
* An exciting and unique clinical research program for our residents.
* Opportunities for competitive subspecialty fellowship placement.

General Surgery
Our goal is to recruit individuals who are committed to excellence in patient care. The freestanding, fully accredited five-year general surgery program presently graduates four senior residents per year and prepares three additional first year residents for entry into medical and surgical subspecialties. There exists a tradition of excellence in the program that we are committed to perpetuating. Over the years, the residency program has consistently filled with excellent candidates. Graduates of the program have likewise established an outstanding record in passing the examinations of the American Board of Surgery and in going on to fellowship training.

The department of surgery educates junior and senior medical students from the University of Michigan Medical School on rotations throughout the year. Almost all the faculty surgeons hold teaching appointments at the University of Michigan School of Medicine; the Chair of the Department holds the rank of Professor of Surgery.

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is also unique among community hospitals in the commitment of the faculty to the hospital and its programs. We provide general hospital care as well as specialized referral care to a large surrounding population base in Southeastern Michigan. Pertinent 2005 hospital data would include 9,902 surgical cases of which twenty-two percent where general surgical cases. The hospital received more than 85,908 emergency room visits in 2005. The institution is designated as an American College of Surgeon's level II trauma center.

The leadership of the department is committed to new initiatives including the implementation of a formal minimally invasive training component to the general surgery program, as well as development of a surgical critical care service. We are also proud to be in full compliance with the ACGME mandated duty hour restrictions.

Obstetrics & Gynecology
Mission Statement: St. Joseph Mercy Hospital's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is an academic program within a community hospital focused on residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The large volume of surgical and obstetrical patients coupled with a committed faculty using evidence-based medicine allows for training of outstanding clinicians. High academic standards in a supportive, respectful work environment allows each resident to pursue his/her specific goal of competency in the General Ob/Gyn practice or subspecialty training.

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is one of the finest teaching hospitals in the Midwest. As an independent academic medical center focused on the practice and teaching of evidence based medicine, we offer our residents the best of all worlds. The environment of scholarship is defined by faculty active in the pursuit of knowledge. Teaching and research typically found at a university hospital is coupled with a large volume of gynecologic and obstetrical patients creating the program that "has it all".

The foundation of a resident's medical knowledge is based on a sound grasp of the basic sciences. We focus on academics through a rigorous Core curriculum lecture series, weekly Grand Rounds, and monthly Journal clubs. Weekly protected time for all of these educational sessions allows our residents to step back from the demands of patient care.

Research within our department is focused on answering clinical questions pertinent to a practicing obstetrician gynecologist. A Research Department consisting of three PhD;s, four nurse coordinators and a statistician provide support to the resident completing and publishing his or her research project.

We know there is much more to a residency program than obstetrical maneuvers and surgical dexterity. Deciding when to do surgery is as important as learning how to do surgery. Compassionate care is as important as competent diagnosis. Personal development is just as important as the acquisition of professional skills. By emphasizing the entire scope of learning at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, our residents develop the skills to be complete physicians.

Emergency Medicine
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and the University of Michigan Health System sponsor a joint residency in emergency medicine. This is a four-year, fully accredited program that prepares the trainee to take the certifying examination given by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. The program sponsors clinical rotations in the emergency departments at The University of Michigan Hospitals, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Hurley Medical Center in Flint. Rotations in ambulatory, inpatient and intensive care pediatrics are offered at the University's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.
