Graduate Medical Education - Internal Medicine, Family Practice and Dermatology residency program

Valley Hospital Medical Center, founded in 1972, is a licensed 409-bed, full-service acute care hospital. Located in the heart of Las Vegas, the hospital serves the greater Las Vegas area and the surrounding rural communities of Southern Nevada.

The hospital provides comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and emergency care. The Cardiac Center of Excellence offers patients an advanced complete cardiac program focusing on diagnostics and treatment. The HealthPlace for Women and Children provides high-quality care for normal newborn delivery and high-risk maternity and neonatal situations. It features a maternal triage unit, labor, delivery, and recovery suites an antepartum/maternal special care unit, 12 private post-partum suites, and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. These are just some of the many hospital services available to help you make a full recovery.

Program Overview

Valley Hospital's Medical Education Department took its first class of 25 interns and residents in July, 2006. Twenty-one OGME 1 and four OGME 2 positions in Family Practice, Internal Medicine and Traditional Rotating Internship comprised our first class. They represent ten osteopathic colleges from around the country, and show diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Internal Medicine

Valley Hospital Medical Center has a strong committment to training primary care physicians in Internal Medicine. Fellowships in various specialites are being planned for the future. Interns accepted into the three-year Internal Medicine Residency will follow the Internal Medicine specialty track. The curriculum will include participation in each of the services listed below for the minimum time specified. VHMC adheres to the program requirements of the AOA. Osteopathic principles and practices will be incorporated into the curriculum in each department. The continuity ambulatory care experience will be satisfied by attending internal medicine clinic one-half day per week during the first year.

Internal Medicine - 1 month
Critical Care - 1 month
Pulmonary - 1 month
Cardiology - 1 month
Emergency Medicine - 1 month
Radiology - 1 month
Women's Health - 1 month (primarily GYN/Onc, no OB)
Surgery - 1 month (pre- and post-operative care)
Electives - 2 months
Clinic - 1/2 day per week

Internal Medicine - OGME 2

Internal Medicine - 3 months
Neurology - 1 month
Critical Care - 2 months
Infectious Disease - 1 month
Hematology/Oncology - 1 month
Cardiology - 1 month
Nephrology - 1 month
Gastroenterology - 1 month
Elective - 1 month
Clinic - Two 1/2 days per week

The clinical experience will be supplemented by a structured didactic program comprised of:

* Noon Lectures
* Grand Rounds
* Tumor Board
* M & M
* Journal Club
* Board Review
* Departmental Committees

Family Practice

Osteopathic Family Practice is a comprehensive specialty that encompasses the total healthcare of the patient and the family. The Family Practice Residency is a three-year program that emphasizes the importance of continuity of care through increasing participation in ambulatory care settings. VHMC adheres to the program requirements of the AOA, including incorporation of osteopathic principles and practices into the curriculum. The Family Practice curriculum will include participation in each of the services listed below for the minimum time specified.

Dermatology residency program

Valley Hospital was recently approved for a Dermatology Residency Program with three slots. The program is committed to providing excellent patient care while educating and training resident physicians to be clinical practitioners and academic leaders. This program will prepare residents for the specialty practice of dermatology with an orderly, progressive, academic and clinical integration of basic medical sciences and clinical medicine.
