Rheumatology Fellowship

Overview

The Rheumatology Fellowship at the Tufts-New England Medical Center, Tufts University School of Medicine, provides an outstanding opportunity for training in both clinical and research aspects of rheumatic diseases. The fellowship program is designed to prepare physicians or doctorate scientists for positions in academic medical centers, clinical practice, or industry.

Medical Degree Program

The medical degree program is designed as a two- or three-year clinical program for physicians planning a career in academic rheumatology.

First Year, Clinical Training

Goal: expose trainees to all aspects of clinical rheumatology, including critically ill patients in the hospital and diagnostic conundrums in the clinic.

* Three outpatient clinics per week.
* Pediatric Rheumatology elective (12 clinics).
* Consultation service (9 months).
* Orthopedic, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Neurology clinics (3 months).
* Participation in instruction of Tufts residents and medical students.

Second Year, Research Training

Goal: expose fellows to rigorous scientific training in rheumatic diseases under the guidance of a mentor from the rheumatology training faculty.

* 80% - 90% of time is spent in mentored research.
* One rheumatology clinic per week.
* Three months inpatient consultation service.
* Participation in research courses offered through the mentors in Clinical Research Program (optional).

Third Year, Research Training

Goal: intensive academic and research training for fellows who are planning a career in academic rheumatology

* 80% - 90% of fellow time is spent in research.
* One rheumatology clinic per week.
* Participation in research courses offered through the mentors in Clinical Research Program (optional).

Master's Program in Clinical Research/Doctorate Program

Master's Program in Clinical Research: Fellows enrolled in the three-year program may consider participating in a Masters in Clinical Research offered through the Clinical Research Graduate Program at the Tufts University Sackler School of Graduate Medical Sciences. This is intended to meet the growing need for graduate training of biomedical researchers in the methods of clinical research, health services research, clinical epidemiology, and biostatistics. Clinical Research Program students may elect one of the three concentrations: 1) Clinical Investigation; 2) Health Services and Outcomes Research; and 3) Epidemiology/ Biostatistics.

Research Training for Doctorate Candidates: The Rheumatology Division also offers doctorate fellows an intensive clinical research experience with a faculty mentor. Training grants may provide funding to certain fellows for books, journal subscriptions, and society membership fees.

* Weekly rheumatology conference, journal clubs, radiology conferences and immunology conferences.
* Intercity rheumatology rounds
* Research conferences featuring outside speakers sponsored by one of the eight basic science departments at Tufts.
* Research conferences at other Boston universities.
* Departmental retreats, regional and national scientific meetings.
* Required/recommended seminars as decided by the fellow's mentor which best suit the fellow's area of study.

Eligibility

Fellowships are offered to applicants who have completed three years of post-graduate training in Internal Medicine who are interested in post-graduate training referable to rheumatic diseases.
