We will be committed to professional and organizational excellence; and, we will serve others with compassion and respect for individual dignity.

Medical Education

As a teaching hospital, Oakwood accepts responsibility for the training of future generations of physicians by offering resident training in both allopathic and osteopathic medical education programs.

Our mission is to enhance the delivery of excellent healthcare for our community by providing the highest quality education programs. Our programs emphasize the discovery, dissemination and application of new knowledge.

Podiatric Surgery

Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center's three-year surgical residency program offers a unique opportunity for two residents each year.

Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center offers the new podiatric physician an arena that will integrate both excellent surgical training and clinical skills. Residents receive a multi-faceted education encompassing all aspects of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, with an emphasis on the following surgical areas:

* Elective forefoot surgery
* Reconstructive pediatric foot and ankle surgery
* Diabetic (Charcot) limb salvage
* Foot and ankle trauma surgery

Advancement of the profession is paramount at Oakwood, with a strong focus on research. Oakwood residents have published numerous manuscripts in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and have presented multiple abstracts at the annual American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons conference.

The Oakwood Podiatric Surgical Residency Program is fully accredited by the Council of Podiatric Medical Education.

Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center offers residency programs that combine the best of three worlds:

* The open, friendly atmosphere of a community hospital
* The technology of an academic healthcare facility, and
* The diversity of a tertiary referral center

Through a warm, receptive teaching environment, Oakwood residents are encouraged and expected to play an active role in patient care. By giving residents the proper degree of independence, yet being available for guidance and assistance, the Oakwood faculty enables residents to realize their highest potential.

The Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center's Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program welcome four new residents each year. Oakwood offers the unique opportunity for residents to develop their skills in a large community medical center while providing firsthand exposure to all subspecialty areas. Oakwood residents also participate in structured research programs. Altogether, this residency combines the best features of both academic training programs and community-based programs.

Oakwood residents work closely with subspecialists in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Urogynecology, and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility throughout their training. We have generous clinical volume in all areas, with over 4,000 major and minor gynecologic procedures and over 5,500 deliveries performed at Oakwood every year. We also offer ambulatory exposure in resident continuity clinic, Family Practice clinics, private physician offices, and subspecialty clinics.

Oakwood's residency program offers truly comprehensive training in all facets of women's healthcare. We believe that Oakwood is the ideal environment in which residents can acquire a comprehensive knowledge of obstetrics and gynecology and prepare for a career in general practice, subspecialty, or academic medicine. We invite you to browse this website, which will help to familiarize you with our program and what we have to offer.

Obstetric Experience

Designated a Level III perinatal referral center, Oakwood regularly receives high-risk maternal transports from area hospitals. As a result, residents are consistently exposed to a variety of high-risk perinatal conditions, and work closely with Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists to develop experience in managing these pregnancies. By participating in antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care of high-risk patients, residents become skilled in managing a variety of obstetric challenges.

Clinic patients are directly managed by the chief resident of the service, under supervision of the program faculty. In addition, a considerable portion of the hospital's patient population comes from the practices of Oakwood's private faculty, who provide invaluable exposure. Residents take an active role in formulating plans of care for both private and clinic patients. Residents receive ample training in forceps and vacuum deliveries, with approximately 500 operative vaginal procedures performed yearly.

Gynecologic Experience

In addition to the busy obstetrics volume, Oakwood residents also manage a comprehensive gynecology service. Approximately 2,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries are performed annually for benign gynecological conditions.

The Dearborn campus serves as a referral hub for all gynecologic subspecialties. Gynecologic oncologists perform procedures for women with cancers of the reproductive system and work in conjunction with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and gynecologic pathologists to develop a coordinated plan of care. Oakwood's team of specialists in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility provides a full range of infertility treatments, including diagnosis and performance of assisted reproductive technologies. Finally, Oakwood's urogynecologists perform complete evaluations of urogynecologic complaints, including in-office urodynamics, cystoscopy, and all forms of pelvic reconstructive surgery.
