Art Therapy Internship
Description
The Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health offers a challenging post-Masters training internship in Clinical Art Therapy. Since the internship's inception some 30 years ago, the department has been a leader in integrating clinical art therapy into a diverse and intensive training program. We encourage our interns to participate in training and treatment of clients in individual, group and family therapy modalities. Interns benefit from training opportunities in our Outpatient Clinic.
Given the opportunities for clinician training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, it is not surprising that the department has maintained one of the finest post-masters training programs on the West Coast. The training program employs a well-rounded approach that integrates psychodynamic, developmental and family systems theories. We offer in-depth training in evaluations/assessments, diagnosis and a broad range of psychopathology. The multidisciplinary character of the clinic affords the trainee opportunities to work with professionals from several disciplines including psychiatry, psychology, social work, educational psychology and pharmacy.
The Art Therapy Internship is for one year - either part time (20 hours per week) or full time (40 hours per week) with the option of a second year, mutually agreed by staff and intern. A stipend of $200 per month is offered for the 20 hour per week position and $400 per month for the full time position. All internship hours can be applied toward the marriage and family therapist (MFT) license and toward the registered art therapy (ATR) awarded by the American Art Therapy Association.

Clinical Psychology Fellowship
The Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center offers two postdoctoral fellowships in advanced general clinical psychology. These positions are for the 12-month academic year with a starting date of the first Monday in July. The position has a stipend of $400 a month. Students receive a certificate of completion upon fulfilling the program requirements. The fellowship provides 1,600 hours of supervised clinical experience. The program's goals are to:
* Develop superior professional psychologists, competent in the basic clinical skills of diagnostic evaluation and psychotherapy
* Provide a grounded theoretical understanding of human behavior to meet the changing needs of our society
* Enhance ability to apply research and theory to clinical work
Program Structure
The fellowships require that 50% of a student's time be spent in direct client services. That time should include 25% in direct patient/client contact (i.e., in individual, family and group settings involving assessment and consultation). It also requires at least:
* Two hours of direct individual clinical supervision weekly
* Participation in group supervision
* Assignment to a multidisciplinary treatment team
In addition, fellows spend at least two hours a week in:
* Cognitive behavioral therapy training
* Cultural diversity
* Human sexuality
* Child development
* Art therapy
* Dream analysis
* Psychopharmacology
* Psychological testing (see scheduled seminars and conferences)
We have integrated the program into the larger Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health by offering rotations in:
* Partial hospitalization and inpatient psychiatric units
* The Early Childhood and Cheerful Helpers Therapeutic Preschool Centers
* School-based services
* Neuropsychological rehabilitation services
* Co-therapy, group therapy and videotaped supervision
Evaluation Procedures
We conduct fellow evaluations at mid-year and year-end. We evaluate fellows for their competency in initial clinical evaluations and individual treatment. We base them on written evaluations from supervisors and a review by the fellowship director. Fellows not meeting competency requirements are given three months to do so. Should we have to consider termination, we refer the fellow to the Fellowship Steering Committee, offering full access to grievance procedures. The Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Human Resources Policies and Procedures manual outlines the procedure for "Conflict Resolution: Non-Supervisory Employees." Fellows receive copies of the procedure at the start of the internship year.
Resources
Fellows have access to an extensive medical library, an assessment laboratory with computerized test scoring, audio-visual equipment, individual offices, group/conference rooms and administrative support.
Qualifications and Application Procedure
We require qualified candidates to have completed all doctoral degree requirements from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. That includes an internship meeting Association of Psychology Postdoctoral & Internship Centers (APPIC) standards by the first day of the fellowship. Fellowship applicants who have not completed either an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited or APPIC member internship program should submit documentation certifying their internship has met APPIC standards. Please send:
* Curriculum vitae
* Letter of interest
* Three letters of reference (including one from the postdoctoral internship director) all sent directly from the source
