Otorhinolaryngology/Oro-Facial Plastic Surgery

This is a five year residency designed to prepare the graduating resident to manage all aspects of a general otorhinolaryngology practice or proceed on to a subspecialty fellowship training.

This residency generally accepts one track intern per year. To apply for a PGYI position, you must complete the ERAS application. To apply for PGYII or above, you must complete the Genesys online application.

First Year Tracking Internship

* 6 months in Internal Medicine, Ob/Gyn, Family Practice and Emergency Medicine.
* 6 months in General Surgery.
o Will provide a strong foundation in surgical technique
o Peri-operative management
o Trauma care
* Certification in advanced trauma life support is required.

Second Year

* Begins the focus on basic skills in head and neck surgery.
* Core curriculum provides emphasis on both medical and surgical treatment as well as basic sciences.
* Introduction of diagnostic testing particular to Otorhinolaryngology.
* Out-rotation in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Children's Hospital of Michigan is provided.

Third Year

* Progressive training in surgical techniques building upon knowledge and skills.
* Development of clinical knowledge, technical skills and surgical judgment under close supervision.
* As surgical experience is gained, introduction to basics of oro-facial plastics surgery including an out-rotation to improve exposure to this subspecialty field.

Fourth Year

* Continue to develop plastic surgical technique.
* Exposure to more advanced concepts in Oncology and Head and Neck surgery.
* Focus on both Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology.
* Out-rotation in Head and Neck Surgery.

Final Year

* Expectation to manage all aspects of patient care.
* Emphasis on advanced techniques including a rotation in Otology and Neuro-otology.
* Leadership responsibilities encouraged through direction of junior residents, including responsibilities for their clinical and didactic training.
* Introduction of basic concepts of practice management.

On-Going

* Completion of home-study course for at least two years of training (to fulfill the college requirements for certification).
* Completion of certificate courses in Temporal Bone dissection and Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.
* Temporal Bone Lab provided for supervised instruction and independent study of surgical techniques in the treatment of various otologic pathologies.
* Didactic training through regular conferences, clinical rounds and journal clubs.
