Family Medicine Residency Program
Program Overview
The Family Medicine Residency of the Greenville Hospital System is a three-year training program fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program leads to eligibility for the American Board of Family Practice Certification Examination. Our training emphasizes the core competencies required by the ACGME:
* Patient Care
* Medical Knowledge
* Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
* Interpersonal and Communication Skills
* Professionalism
* Systems-Based Practice
The program supports the belief that an ideal family physician treats patients of all ages, emphasizes wellness and preventive medicine, is sensitive to the emotional needs of patients, understands the effect of illness on the entire family, and supports the family and patient in the hospital and long-term care facilities. Our residents learn to care for patients from prenatal care through geriatric care, end-of-life care, and death.
Required and elective rotations throughout the hospital and community offer residents a broad base of knowledge. Residents in OB/GYN, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Orthopedics are active teachers and colleagues of family practice residents.
Twenty Medical Students from each class of the University of South Carolina (USC) School of Medicine complete two years of clinical training on this campus, as well as Medical Students from various schools who do electives with our department. These students add extra depth to the teaching environment.
