As one of the world's premier cancer centers, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is committed to exceptional patient care, leading-edge research, and superb educational programs. The close collaboration between our physicians and scientists is one of our unique strengths, enabling us to provide patients with the best care available today as we work to discover more effective strategies to prevent, control, and ultimately cure cancer in the future. Our education programs train future physicians and scientists, and the knowledge and experience they gain at Memorial Sloan-Kettering has an impact on cancer treatment and the biomedical research agenda around the world.

The melding of research with patient care is at the heart of everything we do. At Sloan-Kettering Institute, state-of-the-art science research flourishes side-by-side with clinical investigation and treatment at Memorial Hospital, the nation's oldest cancer hospital. We are also one of 39 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, affirming our leadership in research, patient care, and education.

During this period, the fellow is engaged in the examination of the cytopathologic material submitted to the Service under the supervision of the attending staff. The material comprises approximately 32,500 specimens per year (18,000 gynecologic and 13,000 nongynecologic).

The program includes participation in the Intraoperative Cytology Consultation Service and interaction with the School of Cytotechnology operated by the Cytology Service. Fellows are encouraged to participate in research projects with members of the department and/or in cooperation with clinicians. There is a cytology-based Fine Needle Aspiration Service.

Eligibility
This fellowship is available to those who have completed their basic training in pathology, either Anatomic Pathology (AP) or combined Anatomic Pathology-Clinical Pathology (CP), with at least two years of AP training in an accredited United States or Canadian program.

All qualified applicants are welcome, but preference will be given to those committed to an academic career in pathology. A definite attempt will be made to identify individuals interested in combining two pathology fellowships offered at Memorial Sloan-Kettering under the assumption that this experience should provide them with a strong basis for a successful career in Academic Pathology.

Surgical Pathology Subspecialty Fellowships
Advanced training in the following Surgical Pathology subspecialty areas is available: breast pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, genitourinary pathology, gynecologic pathology, dermatopathology, thoracic pathology, and hematopathology. These one-year fellowship programs provide intensive exposure to all the components of the respective subspecialty, concentrating on the investigative aspects.

Clinical responsibilities include exposure to in-house and consultation cases related to the applicant's subspecialty. Ample time is provided for research projects carried out under the supervision of the attending pathologists. Exposure to the various techniques used in that subspecialty (immunohistochemical, cytogenetic, molecular, etc.) and interaction with other clinical and basic departments working in the field are an integral part of the program. Basic research work is carried out in one of the laboratories of the Division of Molecular Pathology.
