The Mission - Patient Care, Teaching and Research
The Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism has as its foundation, The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and public service. Section facilities include an in-hospital office complex, dedicated clinical endocrine and research laboratories, and clinical research center.

We provide specialized care for patients with diseases of the endocrine glands, including thyroid disease and osteoporosis. We offer complete diagnostic and therapeutic services. Areas of expertise include pituitary disorders, gonadal problems, calcium and parathyroid gland disorders, hirsuitism and adrenal problems. Our specialists are also involved in leading research efforts into the effects of radiation on the endocrine glands, nutrition and diabetes, the causes of diabetes, the effects of hormones on the bones and the prevention of osteoporosis.

Fellowship Program in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism
The Endocrine Fellowship Program (two years with an optional third year) aims to offer a balance of training in both the clinical and research aspects of endocrinology and metabolism. The scope and structure of the program is designed to fulfill requirements for board eligibility in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, as described in the AMA Graduate Medical Education Directory.

The goal of the program is to provide comprehensive, diligent, academically-based training and experience that would give opportunities to the fellows for developing the cognitive knowledge, psychomotor skills, interpersonal skills, professional attitudes, and practical competence required to function as consultants in the field of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism.

Consultative and longitudinal care is provided in the outpatient clinics and fellows participate in both. Fellows are expected to follow his/her longitudinal patients for the duration of his/her training. Fellows typically attend 2 to 3 clinic sessions per week. The core clinics that provide continuity throughout training are the UIC General Endocrinology Clinic and the Jesse Brown VA General Endocrine Clinic. Other clinics offer exposure to special topics (pediatric endocrinology, gynecological endocrinology, and menopause), and demonstrate different medical settings.

The subspecialty training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism is a combined program among four institutions: The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago, Jesse Brown Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center, Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, and Advocate Christ Hospital and Medical Center.

The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago was founded in 1882 to serve the healthcare needs of the people of Illinois. Over 600 primary care physicians and specialists provide high quality primary and referral care to patients from the city, state and around the world. The University Hospital is a modern 424-bed facility with seven specialized intensive care units. The University of Illinois at Chicago Health Sciences Center includes the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Associated Health Professions, Nursing and the School of Public Health, all of which interact regularly with the medicine housestaff. The University of Illinois Medical Center is ranked one of the nation's best teaching hospitals by U.S. News and World Report. The new UIC Outpatient Care Center, which opened in 1999, is a state-of-the-art facility with a fully computerized medical record system. Its 245,000 square feet house all subspecialty and general medicine outpatient services and The Women's Health Center.

Jesse Brown Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center, which recently celebrated its 50 years of academic partnership with the UIC College of Medicine, is a tertiary care facility with 250 beds and a modern ambulatory care center. Primary care services are divided into four practices and are based on the "continuity of care model". The total number of visits in the Ambulatory Care Center is among the highest of all the VA facilities. All faculty hold academic appointments at the UIC, and many are involved in various research projects ranging from molecular biology to outcomes research.

Michael Reese Hospital founded in 1881 is a private hospital with 200 beds. A team of diabetes educators, psychologists and endocrinologists, including the endocrine fellows, evaluate patients in a multidisciplinary diabetes clinic, a general endocrine clinic and a clinical metabolic unit.

Advocate Christ Hospital and Medical Center is a 792 bed private facility with more than 600 physicians. The Hospital has an University of Illinois-affiliated Internal Medicine training program. Since opening in 1961, it has become the largest health care provider in Chicago's southwest suburb.
