Versa HD linac delivered to Newport, Wales, site of Proton Partners cancer therapy center

October 26, 2016
October 21, 2016 – The linear accelerator machine arrived on site today at the first proton beam therapy centre to be built in the UK, marking another milestone for Proton Partners International.

The centre, which is under construction in Newport, Wales, will offer an all-encompassing cancer service for patients – including proton beam therapy, traditional radiotherapy, chemotherapy, imagine and well-being.

The linear accelerator, also known as the LINAC, is a machine used in external beam radiotherapy, which is the most common type of radiotherapy and will be key to the cancer service on offer to patients at Proton Partners’ centres.

The machine customises high energy x-rays to conform to a tumor’s shape and destroy cancer cells while sparing surrounding normal tissue. The LINAC is able to treat all parts/organs of the body.

Proton Partners has purchased Elekta’s Versa HD LINAC system for each of its cancer centres, the most modern linear accelerator on the market. Alongside this is this Elekta MOSAIQ system, offering a fully integrated Oncology Information System (OIS) consisting of MOSAIQ® radiation oncology, MOSAIQ® medical oncology and MOSAIQ proton therapy.

The cancer centre will treat up to 500 unique patients every year and will accept NHS patients, medically insured private patients and self-pay patients.
