Philips moving big into software game: CEO

Royal Philips NV has seen the future of health care profits and has signaled its strategy by emphasizing its move into the health care software market, especially imaging informatics.

“The world does not need much more capacity in scanners, but is especially in need of better interpretation of data,” Chief Executive Officer Frans van Houten told a media briefing reported by Bloomberg.

He told reporters that getting to the correct diagnosis is “the holy grail that we all are after,” and estimated that at present as many as half of diagnoses are incorrect.

The move to apps to boost diagnostic accuracy puts the company squarely up against such competitors as General Electric and Siemens. It is interesting to note how this follows the historic moves in the computing sector that saw computer makers getting eclipsed by software providers – and saw shifts from the hardware market to the software market by giants such as IBM.

The latest Philips apps, noted van Houten, will permit the highlighting of distinctions that could otherwise be missed when diagnosing by eye.

Houten advised listeners that a big reason for the move is that estimates suggest that the data-analysis/software market will grow at double the rate of the scanner and hardware market that is his company's traditional market.

At present it generates 3 billion euros ($3.1 billion) in sales. Philips' total sales are about 17 billion euros annually.

The company has allotted 300 million euros specifically for game-changing products, according to the news site, out of a total R&D budget of 1.7 billion euros.

In keeping with this focus on software, Philips recently announced a number of new products and packages.

In mid-November, the company announced plans to release three new MR-based neurology software applications for its Ingenia digital MR systems.

"Our new tools will help bring more definitive diagnosis for these complex indications, ultimately helping improve diagnostic confidence for neurological disorders such as vasculitis, neuropathy, arteriovenous malformation, or tumors," Eric Jean, general manager of MR at Philips, told HCB News.

These software applications include:

– Black Blood Imaging provides the radiologists with high-resolution, 3-D brain images with less blood signal than a 3-D T1w scan without MSDE pre-pulse.

– 4-D-TRANCE produces contrast-free 4-D images of brain vascular anatomy. It allows the radiologist to evaluate both the vascular anatomy and blood flow dynamics.

− MultiBand SENSE allows for the simultaneous acquisition of multiple slices in the brain during fMR exams. The radiologists can increase coverage or resolution without lengthening the scan time.

It also has just announced PerformanceBridge, a new suite of performance management software and services to assist radiology departments. It provides a secure, cloud-based or on-premise software solution, to permit access to near real-time data on departmental performance.

"We are committed to delivering next-generation software and services to bring the power of informatics and decision support to radiology," said Rob Cascella, CEO of the Diagnosis and Treatment businesses at Philips.

"PerformanceBridge Practice has incredible promise for data-driven practice management, including exciting things such as a real local market referral pattern analysis, as well as asset and technologist utilization insights," said Dr. Christoph Wald, chairman, Department of Radiology at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and Professor of Radiology at Tufts University Medical School.

It also has just unveiled its latest version of DoseWise Portal 2.2, the radiation-dose management software platform. The latest release boosts connectivity and informatics capabilities.

"This next generation of DoseWise Portal provides clinicians with a full picture of the patient's exposure history within that institution, for enhanced decision support to ensure that proper dose optimization and justification for exam ordering is accomplished right the first time," said Dominic Siewko, clinical marketing leader and former radiation safety officer at Philips.
