Radiology Residency Training Program

Program Overview
Maricopa Medical Center (MMC) is a part of Maricopa Integrated Health Systems which includes the Arizona Burn Center, the Comprehensive Healthcare Center, the McDowell Healthcare Clinic, 10 community-oriented family health centers, and an attendant care program. The 559-bed hospital is located near the heart of downtown Phoenix. The medical center includes the Valley's only pediatric emergency department open 24 hours a day seven days a week, as well as one of three Level I Trauma Centers in the Central Valley and Arizona's only regional burn center.

Though the Radiology Residency is a new program the department of radiology is fully dedicated to resident growth and education. With the MIHS mission, To provide a full spectrum of high quality, wellness oriented healthcare in an organized, cost sensitive and customer oriented academic environment, in mind, our goal is to turn out competent, compassionate radiologist who will not only succeed on a professional level but also continue on as future educators.

The program has been granted provisional accreditation by the ACGME effective July 1, 2004 and is making every necessary effort to receive full accreditation following our 2007 site visit. We are currently approved for 2 residents per PGY level.

Affiliations
The diagnostic radiology residency program at Maricopa Medical Center is a major affiliate of the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ and the Mayo Medical School, Rochester, MN. Residents currently remain at Maricopa Medical Center for most of their training but also complete rotations at U of A Medical Center, St. Joseph's Medical Center's Barrow Neurological Institute and at local outside Clinics.

Training Program
All first year radiology rotations are at Maricopa Medical Center. Residents begin outside rotations following successful completion of their PGY2 training. Residents are limited to a total of 6 rotations at affiliated institutions. All procedures performed by residents are done under the close supervision of qualified attending physicians. Residents are evaluated at the end of each rotation and meet quarterly with the program director to discuss their progress and academic goals. The program is structured to prepare residents to assume a progressively increasing level of responsibility with each PGY year. Residents receive both clinical and didactic training in all areas of diagnostic radiology needed to prepare them for the ABR written and oral examinations including a weekly 2 hour physics course, annual In-Service and Raphex exams as well as attendance of the 4 week AFIP course in Washington D.C.
