ALBUQUERQUE - The American Society of Radiologic Technologists will present Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Rep. Nathan Deal, R-Ga., with the 2007 Award for Excellence in Radiologic Sciences Advocacy. The award is presented annually to a senator and a representative who have demonstrated their strong support of health care issues facing Americans through their work in Congress.

Sen. Burr was chosen for this honor because he was instrumental in the development of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering within the National Institutes of Health in 2001. He is a member of the Senate's Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. The Senator was also a cosponsor of the RadCARE bill, a bill to amend the Public Health Service Act to make the provision of technical services for medical imaging examinations and radiation therapy treatments safer, more accurate and less costly. The bill unanimously passed the Senate in 2006. Other legislation Sen. Burr sponsored or cosponsored involving health care in the 109th Congress included:

* Extend the special postage stamp for breast cancer research for two years.
* Improve Medicare benefits for beneficiaries with kidney disease.
* Improve stroke prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
* Provide life-saving care for those with HIV/AIDS.
* Provide for a two-year moratorium on certain Medicare physician payment reductions for imaging services.

Rep. Deal is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and chairman of the Health Subcommittee. The subcommittee held a hearing in July 2006 regarding the over utilization of medical imaging. ASRT was invited by Rep. Deal to present testimony on the need for education and credentialing standards at this hearing. Rep. Deal sponsored or cosponsored legislation in the 109th Congress to:

* Provide for the improvement of patient safety.
* Promote a better health information system.
* Improve proficiency testing of clinical laboratories.
* Reauthorize support for graduate medical education programs in children's hospitals.
* Provide revised standards for quality assurance in screening and evaluation of gynecologic cytology preparations.
* Revise and extend the program for providing life-saving care for those with HIV/AIDS.
* Revise and extend the authorities of the National Institutes of Health.

ASRT Board Chairman Cathy L. Parsons, B.S., R.T.(R)(M)(QM), FASRT, said, "It is so important that we have congressional leaders in Washington, such as Sen. Burr and Rep. Deal, who recognize the importance of and advocate for quality health care and patient safety for all Americans. Through presenting this award to each of them, we hope to show ASRT's support and appreciation for the work they are doing."

The awards will be presented to Sen. Burr and Rep. Deal during the R.T. in D.C. lobbying event, March 18-20, in Washington, D.C. The event allows participating medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals to meet with their legislative representatives to discuss important issues relating to ASRT and the radiologic technology profession.
