PH GME Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program

Providence Hospital Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program includes:

* Full range of diagnostic radiology capabilities, including all imaging modalities.
* Modern equipment and facilities, a full service mammography center, multi-detector CT, three month world class pediatric radiology rotation at Children's Hospital of Michigan
* Collegial atmosphere for education. Small program feel with big program volume. Lots of interventional procedures. There is no competition for cases from fellows.

Introduction to Diagnostic Imaging at ProvidenceHospital
Diagnostic radiology encompasses a variety of diagnostic and image-guided therapeutic techniques including all aspects of radiologic diagnosis. Nuclear radiology, diagnostic ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, interventional procedures and other forms of radiant energy. We live in the "Information Age." The last several decades have witnessed a knowledge explosion. Nowhere is this truer than in Diagnostic Radiology, the most technology based medical specialty. The knowledge base necessary to practice competent radiology seems to be constantly expanding. The Radiology Residency at Providence offers a graduate medical education experience of superb depth and scope in all of these modalities.

The entire Radiology Residency Program includes a clinical year in its five year plan. At Providence, you will spend 43 months at the parent institution including its Novi, Michigan outpatient facility, 6 weeks at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and 3 months at Children's Hospital of Michigan. Time will be spent at St. John Hospital in Detroit for additional Nuclear Radiology training. The entire experience will be a rewarding, all encompassing adventure covering all aspects of our exciting specialty. The resident will be provided the fertile feeding ground to develop procedural skills and view cases from every possible pathologic category of disease.

Program Length:
Program length: 4 years. A clinical year is required before starting the radiology residency.

Available Positions:
First year positions: Three (3)
Total number of positions: Twelve (12)

Resident Selection Criteria:
There are three positions available for each academic year. Maturity, competency and special achievements are carefully considered. All candidates are selected through the ERAS Program. Again, a clinical year of preliminary training is required.

ProvidenceRadiology Residency Program Goals and Objectives

*Expose the resident to all facets of the practice of diagnostic radiology. The resident will rotate through the same subspecialty area multiple times to maximize learning and acquire progressive responsibility.

*Provide teaching opportunities for the residents in formal lectures, in one-on-one situations at the view station, at Journal Club, by visiting professors, at outside rotations and lecture series and in film conferences.

*Monitor resident progress through yearly in-service examinations, mock oral board exams and through objective monthly evaluations at the end of each rotation. Residents will also be evaluated by support personnel.

*Monitor the success of the program itself and the teaching abilities of the faculty through evaluations by the residents. The program will also be judged by the resident's performance in the monthly rotations and on their formal examinations. The program will use these evaluations to improve the program.

*Provide for graduated responsibility through repeated exposures to the same procedures and through increasing responsibilities as the resident moves into the senior levels of the residency.

*Offer sufficient breadth and depth of radiological experience that the resident is well prepared for the American Board of Radiology Certification examination and that the resident is prepared to independently and competently practice radiology.

*Provide sufficient clinical background to facilitate interactions between radiology residents and the clinical services.

*Provide an atmosphere which supports and encourages the resident's research and academic interests.

The overall objective of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Providence is to produce well-rounded, ethical and independent general radiologists who have balanced experience in all radiological subspecialties. This education includes monthly rotations in the subspecialties according to a curriculum that is designed to reflect the strengths of the program. Residents at Providence enjoy a high procedure to resident ratio and no competition for cases from fellows. The curriculum includes daily intradepartmental teaching conferences, multiple interdepartmental subspecialty conferences, participation in a visiting professor consortium and a core curriculum of radiation physics and biology.
