St. John West Shore (SJWS) Hospital is the youngest hospital in Cleveland, opening its doors in 1981. Boasting a campus of 68 acres, a capacity for 248 inpatients and a medical staff of nearly 500 physicians, the hospital was the result of a merger of two longstanding healthcare institutions: St. John Hospital and Bay View Osteopathic General Hospital.
Medical Education at St. John West Shore Hospital
In July 1999, the first class of interns and residents began training at St. John West Shore Hospital. After many years of preparation and planning, the hospital, with the support of the West Shore Osteopathic Foundation and the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, joined with Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education to begin a Graduate Medical Education program.
Presently, the hospital has an AOA-approved Osteopathic Internship, Family Practice Residency, and a newly combined Emergency Medicine Residency/Internal Medicine Residency Program. St. John West Shore Hospital also provides an educational environment for medical students, interns, and residents that includes a computer room with internet access, a recently renovated medical library, and regular didactics in the form of daily morning reports, noon lectures, weekly attending lectures, case conferences, and journal clubs.
Elective Rotation
In 1998, SJWS began accepting Medical Students while it was applying for approval from the American Osteopathic Association for post-graduate programs. The hospital's programs are co-sponsored by Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, which coordinates the education for medical students at the hospital.
The hospital accepts medical students each year from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center. Students from a variety of other Osteopathic Colleges are welcome to complete elective rotations at SJWS.
Medial students who are completing elective rotations may be eligible for housing provided by the hospital, as well as on-duty meals. Students can also benefit from a strong didactic program, with daily lectures provided as Morning Reports and Noon Lectures. Students are required to attend other lectures such as weekly block lectures, case presentations, including special didactics such as ethics and medical jurisprudence.

Residences
Emergency Medicine Residency
In July 2001, St. John West Shore Hospital began an Emergency Medicine Residency as their part of the Northeast Ohio Emergency Medicine Consortium. The consortium includes Cuyahoga Falls Hospital, Doctors Hospital in Massillon, South Pointe Hospital, and St. Joseph Hospital.
The consortium gives residents the opportunity to share resources with the other hospitals, including completing trauma rotations at Level I Trauma Centers and Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
SJWS Emergency Medicine Residents will participate in didactics through the consortium. Regular lectures are schedules two times each week and are supplemented by Dog Labs, Procedure Labs, and a lecture series that is provided for all Osteopathic Residents throughout the State of Ohio. Residents also attend Board Review Courses throughout their training.
Family Practice Residency
The Family Practice Residency Program began July 1999 and is a procedure oriented, outpatient-based program. This program's goal is to provide the residents with proper training to become highly competent family physicians.
Family Practice Residents spend three to four half days each week in a Continuity of Care Clinic, which is located within six miles of St. John West Shore Hospital.
Residents also attend weekly block lectures at the hospital, participate in their own Journal Club, and attend monthly didactics with other Family Practice Residents throughout the State of Ohio.
Internal Medicine Residency
The Internal Medicine Residency began July 2001 and includes three-year an Internal Medicine Track Internship program.
This residency provides the resident with training in General Internal Medicine, as well as its sub-specialties. A curriculum has been developed to ensure the resident will have adequate exposure and training to become a qualified, competent physician.
The Continuity Care requirement will be met through Board Certified General Internal Medicine Physicians Offices, allowing the Resident to work directly with a mentor throughout their training.
Because SJWS is partner of Cleveland's University Hospitals Health System, Internal Medicine Residents can also view weekly grand rounds through the hospital videoconferencing system.
Residents will also participate in the didactics at the hospital, including the Teaching Service, noon lectures, weekly block didactics, weekly Cancer Conference, and Journal/Harrison's Club. A Board Review Course will also be developed to prepare residents throughout the training.
