The Department of EENT at Botsford General Hospital believes that osteopathic ENT medicine is a vital discipline within the health care delivery system. We realize our obligation to the public to provide quality health care dealing with the emergent, acutely ill and ambulatory patient. We also understand and promote the very important role that Osteopathy plays in the comprehensive quality of health care today.

Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery
The specialty of otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery consists of the science of the ear, nose and larynx, and their functions and diseases combined with facial plastic surgery. The purpose of an osteopathic otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery training program are to: (1) provide in-depth training to prepare the osteopathic physician for diagnosis and treatment of the ear, nose and larynx and the diseases and surgery related to them; (2) improve and maintain diagnostic and therapeutic standards in the Department of Otolaryngology through the utilization of osteopathic principles and practices in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient; (3) provide an environment to allow qualified physicians to develop knowledge and skill; (4) improve patient care, (5) provide a center for education and patient care in otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery, (6) develop teaching skills of residents and introduce them to basic research and its clinical applications, (7) emphasize quality health care while the same time integrating an appreciation of quality assurance and cost benefit ratios in accordance within the current economic, legal, and social milieu.

Objective

To develop residents into mature, responsible ENT specialists.

Content And Requirements
A. The residency training program in otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery shall consist of a specialty track internship and four (4) years of otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery, as directed by the program director and approved by the AOCOOS and the COPT.

1. This specialty track internship will be comprised of rotations with an emphasis in general surgery as well as other surgical subspecialties. The components of the rotating internship will also include obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine and family practice.

B. The general content of this program includes:

1. Utilization of osteopathic principals and practice relating to the specialty.
2. Basic and allied sciences as they pertain to otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery.
3. Clinical training in head and neck surgery, otology, rhinology and laryngology. General areas will include surgical exposure to procedures of the nose, maxilla salivary glands, lips, oral cavity, neck, larynx, thyroid, middle ear, facial nerve, inner ear, nasal endoscopy, bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, and congenital anomaly, It will also include exposure to otoplasty, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty facial trauma, flaps and grafts in their application to head and neck surgery.
4. Exposure to issues which the resident will face as a practicing clinician; including health policy, managed care, health administration, medical ethics, medical liability and practice management.

C. This residency training program provides the resident with increasing responsibility in the care of patients, under the supervision of the attending physician, as he/she acquires skills in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear, nose and larynx.

D. This residency training program allows the residents to act as first assistant in all otolaryngologic/facial plastic surgical procedures.

E. Botsford General Hospital and this program supports the resident to attend professional activities related to the specialty of otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery.

F. This program includes postgraduate courses in allergy, facial plastic surgery, head and neck surgery, laser surgery, sinus surgery and temporal bone surgery. Additional courses are optional.

G. Also included is a basic science course restated to otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery consisting of no less than one hundred (100) clock hours of study.
