Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program, dating from 1949, is proud of its continual accreditation since its first review. Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital has long been one of the busiest obstetrics and gynecology units in the Rocky Mountain region, handles a large number of cases and deliveries that is unmatched in the Great Plains States or the Pacific Northwest. The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is a fully approved and accredited four year training program with four residents in each year for a total of 16 residents.

For the physician primarily interested in a private, general Ob/Gyn Practice, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital offers an excellent opportunity to participate in a training program with ample academic exposure and stimulation and a large volume of interesting and challenging patients. Saint Joseph Hospital residents receive broad exposure to the subspecialties, giving them an excellent opportunity to pursue further fellowship training.

The Gyn surgical experience available to the residents consistently ranks among the largest in the country. The program data summary, issued by the Resident Review Committee for Obstetrics and Gynecology, compares the experience of Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital Ob/Gyn residents to a national program mean, and Saint Joseph Hospital ranks very high nationally.

The Labor and Delivery Unit at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital features 14 state-of-the-art LDR suites, family waiting areas, Jacuzzis in each room, soft lighting, built-in newborn bassinets in each LDR, two operating rooms, and a unique combination delivery/operating room for high risk deliveries. There is a spacious physicians lounge area that includes sleep rooms, dining area in the lounge with a big screen TV, and state of the art centralized fetal monitoring system. On the unit there is a confidential boardroom behind the nurses station for patient report, charting, meetings, and meals. The unit also has a direct intercom communication system with our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

During a recently conducted nation-wide poll of ob/gyn residency programs, information was obtained which indicates that ninety-five percent of all programs require a resident research project. Most research projects are required for continuation from the third to fourth year of residency. In keeping with this trend in training excellence, we will institute a similar requirement for incoming house officers for the 2006 year. Residents will be required to have a topic selected by the end of their PGY-1 year.

General Educational Objectives
The overall educational objectives of the program of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital are based on Educational Objectives: Core Curriculum in Obstetrics and Gynecology. This format is reviewed with each new edition, and continues to allow for the training of physicians in the primary and preventive care of women, pregnancy, and the female reproductive system. The educational objectives strive to accomplish the following for graduating residents:

1. To be able to practice the full range of obstetrics and gynecology in a recognized physician-patient relationship.
2. To successfully complete the certifying examinations of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
3. To serve as a consultant in obstetrics and gynecology to other physicians and health care providers.
4. To enter advanced training in the subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology as talents and aspirations dictate.
5. To establish lifelong habits of scholarship and intellectual curiosity.
6. To recognize the special and unique role of the obstetrician/gynecologist in their promotion of health and well being for women and their unborn children.
7. To obtain and demonstrate competencies in patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems based practice.

Rotations
First-year residents can count on a full obstetrical experience, including neonatal resuscitation and formal ultrasound training. All residents enrich their first year of postgraduate training with one month spent on the Family Medicine Service as well as one month learning Clinical Applications of Ultrasound.

On the OB Service the OB Chief Resident rounds with an Attending Physician every day overseeing and approving and/or making management decisions. On the Antepartum Service the first, second or third year resident rounds with the perinatologists.

Second and third year residents enjoy increasing responsibility in obstetrics and gynecology cases as well as in the specialty services of urogynecology, reproductive endocrinology, and gynecologic oncology.

The Fourth-year residents share the responsibility of OB and GYN Chief taking turns overseeing the entire service. They also have elective, flexible, and didactic four week rotations where they can pursue additional areas of academic interest.

Didactics
At least five hours each week are devoted to academic sessions that are conducted by the director, attending staff members, visiting faculty from other clinical and laboratory departments within the Hospital, residents, and visiting faculty from other hospitals and Universities. Also, house staff are welcome to attend meetings and lectures at the Colorado Section of the A.C.O.G.

A monthly perinatal morbidity conference reviews low Apgar score babies as well as perinatal deaths. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Saint Joseph Hospital can accommodate 33 neonates with overflow space to accommodate 6 additional babies when needed. The NICU is a recognized high-risk Level III nursery and has five full time neonatologists on staff. The neonatologists participate actively in departmental lectures, seminars and discussion groups.

A monthly Gynecologic Pathology conference reviews all patients with malignant disease. Residents review the histological specimens before the conference and participate actively in the management discussion on all patients. A gynecological oncologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, several pathologists and the attending physicians participate in the process.
Other Conferences Include: *Journal club, *Fetal strip review, *Obstetrical Ultrasound, and *Obstetric and gynecologic patient reviews
