Philips and NovoPath collaborate to enhance anatomical pathology workflow

Royal Philips and NovoPath Inc. have entered into a software collaboration to enhance the digital workflow of anatomic pathologists.

Clients that utilize both Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution/Wholeslide Imaging System and the NovoPath Anatomic Pathology Software Platform will now have the option of interfacing both software systems, enabling remote viewing and capturing capabilities, improved turnaround time and more pleasant user experiences.

"Pathology laboratories have specific information flow needs managed by their Laboratory Information System. This means our digital pathology system's Image Management System needs to communicate seamlessly with many LIS systems from different vendors," Hans Driessen, senior marketing and communications manager for digital pathology solutions at Philips, told HCB News. "Our IntelliSite Pathology Solution's flexible design allows for bi‐directional integration with leading LIS vendors, such as NovoPath, to provide our mutual customers with actionable information when and where they need it most."

The collaboration follows a thorough development and testing process to integrate the anatomic pathology workflows of Philips IntelliSite Image Management System and NovoPath's Anatomic Pathology Lab Information Systems (LIS) software for a common client, who wished to remain anonymous, with pathologists stationed across the U.S.

The IntelliSite Pathology Solution offers a flexible system design that enables bidirectional integration with LIS vendors to inform and assist customers in their decision-making, eliminating duplication of work and ensuring patient safety with the avoidance of material handling errors.

Using the interface, customers can now view digitally scanned slides and diagnose a case in one system rather than through two separate applications, thereby decreasing the number of tasks required for examining the slides.

“This streamlines the workflow of a pathologist by reducing the number of ‘clicks’ required, resulting in a more efficient case,” Rick Callahan, vice president of sales and marketing at NovoPath, told HCB News. “It puts all the information needed to diagnose a case in one application, which improves the turnaround time as well as client satisfaction.”

Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution was FDA-cleared for diagnostic use last April and utilizes advanced software tools to manage the scanning, storage, presentation, reviewing and information sharing processes.
