GE Healthcare and AliveCor team up to enhance data access on atrial fibrillation

With GE Healthcare’s MUSE Cardiac Management System, providers can now securely interpret and make diagnoses for cardiac patients utilizing AliveCor’s KardiaMobile 6L ECG device outside of the hospital.

Designed for use at home or on the go, the KardiaMobile 6L ECG device utilizes AI to detect atrial fibrillation, as well as other heart rhythm conditions. MUSE is a vendor-agnostic system that connects with hospital EMRs to streamline the flow of cardiac information. With it, users can receive and analyze information faster to make more informed decisions around patient care.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of heart arrhythmia and often puts people at higher risk for stroke. More than 450,000 patients are hospitalized each year due to the condition, which is also responsible for 158,000 deaths annually.

Both companies expect their technologies to allow physicians to access trusted patient data within their existing workflows and make more confident diagnoses, as well as effectively manage patients proactively at any point in the care process. Additionally, they hope to reduce hospitalizations related to atrial fibrillation and other cardiac conditions.

"Patients can conveniently monitor their heart health in any environment, and physicians are able to compare the patient's remote ECGs to prior ECGs or other relevant results, expanding diagnostic capabilities through continuity of care," Ashutosh Banerjee, general manager of diagnostic cardiology and cardiology solutions for GE Healthcare's life care solutions, told HCB News.

While patients using AliveCor’s six-lead device can share remote ECGs with physicians via mobile or email mediums, the data is not integrated into the clinical workflow of the EMR, and the doctor cannot easily compare the results to prior ECGs or findings from other diagnostic tools and tests. Used by 87% of top cardiac hospitals in the U.S., MUSE leverages GE’s EK12 algorithms to assess ECGs and integrate them into its patient record and hospital EMRs. This allows physicians in the network who are involved with a patient’s care to view this information immediately in the EMR and make faster decisions.

A subscription connects the patient to the hospital’s clinical desktop that allows them to record ECGs using the KardiaMobile 6L device. The data is automatically transferred from the AliveCor cloud server directly into MUSE, with providers able to quickly evaluate six-lead ECGs. This makes decision-making faster and can help determine if any patients need to come into the hospital for a confirmatory ECG.

"Today's patient workflows are siloed and broken," said Banerjee. "A patient of arrhythmia is always worried even if their consumer ECG device doesn't specifically indicate they are having an episode and they tend to rush to the ED regardless. Patients with arrhythmia/atrial fibrillation are usually frequent flyers to the ED, and 30% of these visits are avoidable. Providers are also inundated by ECGs sent by emails or just phone calls from worried patients. With the AliveCor ECGs in MUSE, patients can replace their fear with confidence — confidence that their physicians have direct access to the ECGs they take at home with their KardiaMobile 6L device."

Additionally, the combination of both technologies adds to GE’s Edison platform functions, which are designed to enhance efficiency, improve patient outcomes and experiences and increase access to care.
