LifePoint Health, in Brentwood, Tennessee, has deployed Google Cloud’s Healthcare Data Engine (HDE) to improve interoperability and extend the reach of its care to patients who live outside large urban areas.

Google Cloud’s HDE aggregates and organizes data from multiple sources, including medical records, clinical trials and research, to create holistic views of a patient’s longitudinal record in real time. It provides a secure, compliant and scalable cloud environment for use of AI and advanced analytics.

LifePoint will use the technology to create digital solutions and care models, as well as facilitate interoperability among its numerous disparate EMR systems, spread out across its more than 60 acute care facilities, over 30 rehabilitation and behavioral health hospitals and more than 170 additional sites of care nationwide.

This will give providers a more complete view of the patient’s health, according to Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. "Bringing data together from hundreds of sources and applying AI and machine learning to it will unlock the power of data to make real-time decisions — whether it is around resource utilization, identifying high-risk patients, reducing physician burnout, or other critical needs,” he said in a statement.

The HDE technology is supported by Google Cloud’s scalable and secure managed services, which ensure HIPAA compliance and leverage its fully-managed, serverless data warehouse, BigQuery, for robust processing.

LifePoint will use it to mitigate challenges associated with traditionally siloed data; improve interoperability for in-person and virtual settings; and increase access to high-quality care outside of large cities to reduce travel requirements on patients.

Along with LifePoint Health’s security, privacy controls and processes, Google Cloud’s infrastructure and secure data storage will protect the use of and access to patient data.

The partnership aligns with LifePoint Health’s Making Communities Healthier initiative, and makes the reach of its care more equitable, according to David Dill, chairman and chief executive officer of LifePoint Health.

"We are excited to combine the high-quality clinical care and scale of LifePoint's diversified healthcare network with the innovation, agility, and security of Google Cloud HDE, so we can enhance how we deliver the right care to our patients at the right time and through the right channels,” he said.
