FLINT, Mich.—McLaren Flint, the full-service, 378-bed hospital serving all of Genesee County, has named Varsha V. Moudgal, MD, CPE, FACP, FIDSA, as the hospital’s chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs.
As CMO, Dr. Moudgal will provide oversight and lead the implementation of all clinical services delivered within McLaren Flint and its regional facilities. An infectious disease specialist by training, she also brings extensive experience as a healthcare executive leader, having most recently served as associate chief medical officer at Trinity Health Livingston.
“I’m excited to join McLaren Flint, with its rich history and strong ties to the community — it really is a staple in mid-Michigan,” Dr. Moudgal said. “The chance to lead such a diverse staff, who has demonstrated time and again its ability to provide exceptional care while introducing the latest in medical technology, is an incredible opportunity. As the medical staff leader, Dr. Moudgal will liaise between the staff of providers and hospital leadership to ensure that clinical quality and patient experiences upholds the McLaren Health Care commitment to delivering exceptional care in a safe setting. At McLaren Flint, this care includes emergency and trauma, stroke and neurology, oncology (including proton therapy), orthopedics, and cardiovascular care, in addition to its many other services.

As a physician leader, she was instrumental in developing and expanding numerous hospital service lines, ensuring each adheres to strict guidelines for safety and quality. And as an infectious disease specialist, she led Trinity Health Livingston’s COVID-19 response, which also involved directly coordinating with local health officials to provide the greater community with clear and accurate information throughout the pandemic. For this, she earned the Bob Lyons Community Leadership Award in 2021.

A practicing physician since 1999, Dr. Moudgal earned her degree from Lokmanya Talak Medical College in Bombay, India, before continuing her training as an internal medicine resident and an infectious disease fellow at Detroit-area hospitals. During her clinical practice, she also undertook additional administrative roles of increasing responsibility, ultimately obtaining a Certified Physician Executive (CPE) degree from the American Association for Physician Leadership.
She has served in mentorship roles as the infectious diseases fellowship program director and also as an associate professor in the division of infectious disease at the Medical College of Ohio and Wayne State University.
