Siemens Healthineers introduced its Biograph Vision.X PET/CT scanner, the next-generation of its Biograph Vision system family, at the Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) 2023 Annual Meeting this past weekend in Chicago.
The system’s Optiso Ultra Dynamic Range (UDR) detector technology has a time-of-flight (TOF) of 178 picoseconds (ps), the fastest in the industry, and 48-mm3 volumetric resolution. These capabilities drive up performance by 20%, creating faster patient throughput that reduces radiation exposure as well as radiotracer costs.
The Optiso UDR detector is based on silicon photomultipliers, and uses 3.2 mm x 3.2 mm lutetium oxyorthosilicate crystal elements to boost spatial resolution higher than with larger crystals. It is these same crystals that give the system its volumetric resolution and TOF.
“This level of precision is more important than ever, as more physicians now use PET/CT imaging not only for diagnosis, but throughout the patient care cycle — from diagnosis to therapy monitoring to post-therapy follow-up. And such precision in PET/CT is invaluable in theranostics, where diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities are combined to help treat post-recurrent prostate cancer patients,” James Williams, head of Siemens Healthineers' molecular imaging, said in a statement.
Biograph Vision.X also has the AIDAN intelligent imaging platform, which is built on more than 700 machine- and deep-learning patents from Siemens Healthineers, for improving operational efficiency and speeding up workflow. Its 78 cm bore reduces anxiety and allows for easy readjusting of radiotherapy devices or bariatric patients.
The system can fit inside any room designed for a PET/CT scanner from the Biograph Vision family, and will be made available as an in-field upgrade to current owners of the Biograph Vision system.
It is 510(k)-pending, and not currently available in the U.S. or any other country.
