UCSF Health has opened the Bayfront Medical Building at its Mission Bay campus, enhancing access to a wide range of healthcare services in a single facility, including primary, specialty, and urgent care, as well as outpatient surgery.
The 181,000-square-foot, five-story building will host over 130 physicians and expects to accommodate around 131,000 patient visits annually. Approximately one-third of these will be new patients. The facility's expanded capacity includes six new primary care physicians, adding an estimated 20,000 primary care visits per year.
The facility represents the culmination of a $228 million project that took three years to build,
according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The urgent care center at Bayfront is designed to alleviate pressure on local emergency departments by addressing non-emergent conditions like sprains and sore throats. Initially open 12 hours daily, it will eventually extend to 16 hours a day.
All told, the facility features 14 operating rooms for outpatient surgeries, a radiological imaging suite, a physical therapy gym, a pharmacy, and a lab for blood tests. These services aim to streamline the patient experience by offering a one-stop destination for diverse healthcare needs.
Suresh Gunasekaran, CEO of UCSF Health, emphasized that the new facility is part of UCSF's commitment to providing accessible, top-tier care. "This is more than a building, but a delivery on our promise to the community that leading-edge, compassionate care should be available to anyone who needs it," Gunasekaran said.
The Bayfront Medical Building also features patient-friendly design elements, such as wood trim, natural light, and artwork from local artists, creating a welcoming environment. The facility is accessible via public transportation and includes a new nine-story parking garage.
